Why does the default Email app download the same (POP3) message over and over again?

For the most part, I haven't had too many problems with the stock Email app on my Moto Droid. I have both ActiveSync (Exchange) and POP3 accounts set up and never have trouble with ActiveSync. But for some reason, with the POP3 account, sometimes the app gets into this endless loop and won't stop downloading the exact same message and showing it as unread.
I'll open the message, delete it, and then next time the app checks for new e-mail, the message is back again as if I'd never opened it in the first place.
Usually the problem seems to go away if I either
- delete the message from the message list without opening it, or
- delete it from within the message and then immediately hit "Load more messages".
But neither of these methods work *all* the time; sometimes the message still comes back!
I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and knows why it happens (I assume it's got to be some connectivity issue - I do know that the Email app flakes out a lot due to 3G/WiFi switching, but that's hardly a complete explanation), and if there's any fool proof way to either ensure the message is deleted "for good" or to prevent the problem from ever happening in the first place.
Unfortunately I've never been able to reliably reproduce the issue - it seems to be random or at least intermittent.
Any ideas?

Seems my manufacturer (Xiaomi) has made something wrong there, on their Factory Firmware? Or is Google the one blocking it?
On other accounts, it is possible to delete.
I also have tested to delete Gmail app settings, but the IMAP account still survives.
My phone is rooted and is at Android 11.

The only fix I've read is to delete my email account and then reinstall it. I tried this but it only worked for about a day, and then my empty Trash Folder once again started indicating that the folder is filling up. Any ideas? Thank you.

Samsung Galaxy S9 phone
Until recently I could send/receive emails on my phone with the Samsung default email app with an email address at centurylink.net.
I had a problem with my centurylink.net email and a Samsung support person told me to go into the Mail app and Delete Data, and then I would just have to log in again. However, I have not been able to Set Up Email and Add Account.
I get “Couldn’t verify account
The username or password is incorrect or POP3/IMAP access isn’t turned on for this account. Check your email account setting on the web, then try again.”
I have confirmed that I have entered my full email address and password correctly (Show password). I can log onto centurylink.net with them on my phone with a browser.
Samsung support says talk to my email provider and Centurylink support says to talk to Samsung. I have gone through this loop 3 times, but still have the problem.
I have also searched online for a solution, but found none.
I am using these parameters, as Centurylink says to use at
https://www.centurylink.com/home/help/internet/email/setup-email-on-android-device.html
Domains centurylink.net
Incoming Server (choose one) POP: pop.centurylink.net, Port: 995, Security: SSL
Outgoing Server SMTP: smtp.centurylink.net, Port 587 TLS
Username Full Email Address

I cannot, for the life of me, find a method to do this on my LG Optimus. Is something like this available for Android?
# Update #
I use the official Google Gmail app. Gmail automatically checks pop accounts, but does not check the accounts on a regular schedule. The POP accounts can be checked manually via "Refresh POP accounts" Labs plugin in desktop browswers. However, this is not available in the Gmail app or in mobile browsers.

I have tried looking but mostly I've found people who cannot connect to their mail account.

Outlook on my computer deletes the server's copy of the message when it syncs, which unfortunately causes the Email app on the Galaxy Nexus to delete its local copy of the message when it syncs.
Is there a way to automatically download new email and receive notifications when it arrives *without* having it sync the deletions? In other words, once the email is downloaded to the device I want it to stay on the device unless I delete it from the device, but I don't want to turn off sync completely.
A related issue occurs when I've synced all the email in Outlook and the Email app on the phone deletes all the messages -- the Email app crashes when the Combined Inbox view is empty. Is there any way to fix this?
(Aside: Is there a way to intitiate a send/receive of all email accounts from the Combined view in the stock email app?)

Honeycomb did. The email was downloaded to the tablet, and kept even after the email was deleted from the server.
I'm using an Acer A500 with Android version 4.0.3 (kernal 2.6.39.4+).
Email set up is 'normal'/standard POP3 account.
Setting is Delete email from server: Never

ICS stock email client consumes too much traffic for POP3 accounts

I have two different POP3 accounts under two different domains. I was using my Samgung Galaxy S2 (I9100 unrooted, unlocked) with stock Gingerbread (2.3.6) and my monthly data usages for emails were ~100 MiB. But, after upgrading stock ICS (4.0.3 I9100XWLP7-Turkiye), in a single day it was ~50 MiB. Due to this reason I've switched K9 client. But, it constantly deleted all of my account settings in a random interval. After realizing it's a known bug for a long time, I've desperately returned stock email. After several tries, a friend of mine advice to "mark all messages as read" immediately after setting accounts to prevent excessive traffic usages. At first, this doesn't make sense to me, but he explained that some old Windows-based email clients were acting in that way (unread messages were constantly downloaded over and over again). Interestingly, it worked. But, after using it for a while (precisely 1-2 days), "Onavo Count" started to warn me again about that email client consumes too much traffic. While investigating the problem, I've noticed that for a single check, it consumes 1-3 MiB traffic even though I've marked all messages as read. And now email client reached ~300 MiB traffic usages in total (I've only 1 GiB/month data plan).
As a summary:
1. I was happy with Gingerbread email client.
2. ICS client consumes too much traffic for each check.
3. K9 was tried. It's very buggy.
4. I don't want to add my POP3 accounts to Gmail to avoid excessive traffic usages (using push notification and such).
5. I don't want to pay an app due to such thing (why should I use Android if even I can't read my emails properly!?). I was happy with stock client. If there is way that I could use it, I prefer that way.
6. I don't want to root my device due to such problems
7. As a last attempt, I could even write my own client which could optimize traffic usages (check only header on 3G connection, download all emails on WiFi etc.)
Any help?
**EDIT:** Seems something is not right with Onavo Count. It frequently warns me about email client (now ~650 MiB) even though I've increased check interval "5 min" to "once a day". And what's more, Onavo Count reports my total traffic usage as ~6 GiB now (still increasing). **But**, according to ICS's built-in data monitor and my operator I didn't used that much traffic (only ~1 GiB). **But again**, this doesn't changed the fact that email client consumes too much data (around ~200 MiB which means x2 after upgrading to ICS, it's verified by both ICS's built-in data monitor and my operator reports).

This is a "pre-sales" question as I don't currently have an Android device. I did try out one when Android was version 1.6, but was dissappointed. I am interested to know if 2.2 or 2.3 is better.
In particular, I use Gmail as my only email client. It operates all my email accounts (3 corporate and 2 personal). Every email is sent and received via the gmail server and is therefore filed and searchable in gmail. When I compose and email, I can choose which account to send it from and it comes via the domain server (i.e. not from gmail).
My impresssion of android is that is can set up seperate email (pop, imap etc) inboxes and operate them directly with each domain server as pop/imap - but I don't want that as emails will not be kept on the gmail server and therefore filed, backed up and searchable from the webmail client.
How does email account aggregation actually work in Android - is it true Gmail Webmail handling or is it just multi-account handling direct with domainemail servers missing Gmails servers in the process?
Thanks
