It's certainly sensible to hide old mail my by default, but how cannot I lookup an old message in INBOX or another folder? Even if the INBOX folder is huge, retrieving all headers should be an option.

A colleague of mine had his e-mail messages deleted from their e-mail account by accident. This happened quite a few weeks ago so he did not notice this until now. By now all the backups of his e-mail account already do not contain these messages anymore.
But he did not check his e-mail on his mobile phone (Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra) and so his mobile e-mail client (Samsung email app) did not sync with the IMAP server. We have disabled the sync, so he can see the older e-mails in his Samsung Galaxy S23. The question now is, how to get these e-mails from this app? There are more than 5000 emails on the phone.
We would like not to have to root the phone to get this done. Does anybody know how we can get his e-mails from the phone? Even if they do not have attachments, that is no problem.
We tried using ADB for the backup of com.samsung.android.email.provider, but his does not seem to work - the backup file is empty. We tried My Backup app, but this still has not finished the backup process so I do not know if this will work or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I used the default Samsung Email app that came with my Samsung Galaxy Note 10. I provided the IMAP details to get emails on my phone. I got rid of the paid account before I got the new phone. I don't have that account anymore.
I can fully open and read all incoming and outgoing. It is doing this while offline, with no wifi or mobile data. Tech support says to screenshot them, but I don't have time since it has too many emails.
How can I transfer the old emails from the old phone to a new phone or to a PC? Any suggestions?

I use a Samsung Galaxy S III and I use the stock Samsung email application and widget (which also comes stock on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2).
I have four Gmail accounts linked to my phone and I have all four Gmail accounts configured for use with my stock Samsung email app (this is different than the Gmail app available on the Play Store).
IMAP is enabled in my Google accounts and all settings match those recommended by Google.
However, when I send an email from my phone, the message doesn't appear in the sent folder, on my phone. Oddly enough, the message does appear in the sent folder on my PC when viewing Gmail in Chrome.
I believe that this error is related to Google's 2-step verification security settings. I remember having this problem about six months ago and that was about the last time I had 2-step security active. I don't remember how I fixed the problem, but it hasn't been an issue for a while. But since that was about the same time I tried (and then gave up on) 2-step verification, I'm guessing that this is the issue.
I recently enabled 2-step verification, then I had a problem with my email, then I turned off 2-step verification, and then the problem went away.
I am well familiar with application-specific passwords and I have set them up (properly, to the best of my knowledge). I also have Google's Authenticator app, and have used that when required.
I believe there is a bug in Samsung's email app that prevents outgoing mail from being saved in the sent folder when 2-step verification is active.
However, if anyone knows for sure what causes this, and whether or not there is a fix for it, I would greatly appreciate any help.

The phone is a Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus and the mail app is Samsung Email version 6.1.75.0. I have created folders on my Android mail app and moved email into them. These folders are not syncing correctly with my mail client I run on the PC (outlook) and are also not visible in the web-based mail portal.
If I create a folder on the phone mail app called 'A1' for instance, it does not sync or appear on any of my other IMAP mail platforms. If I then create a folder using the mail client or web portal called 'A1', it changes the name to 'A1 1' and syncs to the phone correctly. It's as if IMAP knows about the synced folder 'A1' as it won't let me duplicate it, but it is also invisible on the other platforms.
Any ideas?

I tried the beta version of k9 which is to be rebranded as Thunderbird for Android and it does support copying sent messages but not across mailboxes/imap account whereas Google doesn’t support copying emails to a the Drafts folder (you normally have to use a client which support send a message as new directly or put the message in the drafts folder of an other imap account which isn’t Google).

My wife has a cheap oangcc android tablet bought from Amazon.
She uses it to check her email on Google, and on a local Cyrus-
IMAP server.
It has worked fine for years, but now won't collect new mail from
the local imap server. It says it is synching, the whirly thing
comes up for a short time, but new mail doesn't arrive.
The local server has a self-signed certificate. The IMAP settings are port 143 and STARTTLS (accept all certificates).
If I use a different android device, it all works fine.
If I delete her email account on the tablet, and re-create it, it
gets all the email OK. But then, after a short while, new emails
aren't collected any more.
I even tried deleting the gmail data and cache, and recreating
the account. The problem still came back.
I have turned on logging for her mailbox on the cyrus server, and
it is having conversations with the server.
I can't see anywhere where it is asking to download mail from her
inbox.
The conversations from an attempt to sync from her tablet are:

Problems connecting to IMAP email account on 3G/4G

Ever since I got the JRO03O OTA from Verizon on my Galaxy Nexus, I've been having problems retrieving email over a 3G/4G connection. After the sync times out (I assume it times out, because it takes awhile to give up) I get the message "Couldn't connect to server." When I'm on a WiFi network, email retrieves without problems.
The account in question is on my own IMAP server, running on Ubuntu 12.04 server on a VPS. The server configuration has not changed in any way since long before I started having these problems - this started when the OTA came through. My server listens on the newer non-standard ports, 587 and 993, so Verizon doesn't block them - they no longer allow the standard ports 143 and 25 in my area, and more and more ISPs and coffee shop hotspots are blocking them now in favor of the secured IMAP ports.
I do have a secondary account on this phone - a corporate Exchange account, which has no problems retrieving email regardless of what network it's on.
This leads me to two conclusions:
1) The problem isn't in the server or the network. I'm not seeing it with my tablet (Nexus 7), only on my Galaxy Nexus - and only when on the Cell tower networks. Even if I have my tablet tethered off the GNex, indirectly using the cell networks, the tablet has no problems connecting to my IMAP server, but the phone fails to connect.
2) The problem is not related to Exchange, as my corporate account has no problems over either WiFi or 3G/4G. The problem is restricted to my personal IMAP account, which is set as the default email account on this phone.
I'm not sure if it's relevant, but the company Exchange account is not configured on the Nexus 7, just the IMAP account, and of course, my Google account, but that's through the GMail account.
I've done a lot of searching, but can't seem to find a solution. Does anyone have any ideas?
Cheers!

Seems my manufacturer (Xiaomi) has made something wrong there, on their Factory Firmware? Or is Google the one blocking it?
On other accounts, it is possible to delete.
I also have tested to delete Gmail app settings, but the IMAP account still survives.
My phone is rooted and is at Android 11.

I have a OnePLus 7 (not Pro) and use the Outlook app for certain reasons (work).
Because I don't want multiple mail programs if I can avoid it, I always had my Gmail account in there which always worked fine. But now, not sure if this is an update, my Gmail account has become unresponsive. If I delete the account and then:
1. add it via "Add mail account" -> add Google account, it asks for some permissions the Google way and does not complain, but it does no show any emails, not even the unread ones. I'm "done for the day".
2. add it via IMAP (selecting *not* Google) after setting "IMAP enabled" in my Gmail account on the browser, using these directions , it says:
Log-in error
Please check your email and password and try again.
For route 2 I'm sure the problem is not the e-mail or password, because those work in the browser. And route 1 does not seem to work as it does not load messages.
Does anyone know how to access Gmail as IMAP on and Android device? Does it require the 2-step verification somewhere?

I have various IMAP accounts which all work fine both from Outlook on Windows and from MailDroid, Thunderbird, Samsung Email, Windows 10 Mail, etc.
One particular email address gives a login error every time on Outlook for Android, both via autodetect and with manual input, despite my entering exactly the same values as on Outlook for Windows etc. (servers, user names, passwords, SSL/TLS port numbers).
I tested the setup against the Microsoft IMAP tester here https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/tests/O365Imap/input and it passed. In particular there are no material SSL certificate issues.
The account works fine with Outlook for Android on a brand new Android installation (BlueStacks) but not on my 'phone or tablet.
I have also tried (against my better judgment) using the non-SSL ports (which the email server supports) - same login error experienced.
(edited to remove superfluous/confusing material)

However, it was no problem to add the same IMAP account to the GMail App, or some other mail Clients on the same tablet. Or to Thunderbird on Windows, even Outlook on Windows worked fine...
I wondered what the heck is going on. updated outlook on android, no change. So i setup an Test-Mail-Server and sniffed the network traffic. Turns out that my device was not talking to the Mail-Server but some Microsoft servers where... what?? got logins to my IMAP from 52.125.138.21 and 52.125.139.100. WHOIS... 52.125.0.0 - 52.127.255.255 -> Microsoft Corporation (MSFT)...
Why are they logging in to my IMAP Server with user and password... why is Andorid-Outlook telling my SECRET password to some servers @ Microsoft... and... do i have to assume they pass my credentials and all mails so some 3Letter agency? It's just stupid to transport all IMAP communication to MS and from there to the tablet.
So the question is: Is there any way to force Outlook on a Android tablet to directly communicate with the IMAP-Server? I set imap.myserver.ch:993 in the advanced settings... but this also leads to MS logging in and get all mails... still no traffic from tablet to IMAP-Server.
I'm useing Oultook Version 4.2025.3 (42025807) on a Galaxy Tab S6 Android Version 10

I'm using the Gmail app on a Pixel 2 running Android 10. I'm connecting to a private IMAP server (despite the app name, "Gmail" is a general-purpose mail client, not just for Google Mail).
**How can I get it to recognize my Archive folder?**
My IMAP server (Dovecot) offers an Archive folder, which is honored by all other IMAP clients (Roundcube, Windows 10 Mail). The Andoid Gmail app, however, does not show an archive button when reading the mail, and swiping will delete—rather than archive—the message.
When I'm reading Google Mail, it works as expected; there's an archive button next to the trash, and swiping archives the message. With my Dovecot account, the archive button isn't shown, and swiping moves it to the Trash folder.
Here's what the IMAP server returns for available folders:
d list "" *
* LIST (\HasNoChildren \Archive) "." Archive
* LIST (\HasNoChildren \Sent) "." Sent
* LIST (\HasNoChildren \Drafts) "." Drafts
* LIST (\HasNoChildren \Junk) "." Junk
* LIST (\HasNoChildren \Trash) "." Trash
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." INBOX
d OK List completed (0.001 + 0.000 secs).
This is correct, and is honored by other clients.
In the Gmail app, if I click on the hamburger menu when viewing a message, I can select "Move to", and it shows an Archive folder there (in fact, Archive is the only folder listed there). Selecting this does move it to the Archive folder. This is unworkable, though; I need the Archive button while reading, and I need swiping to archive instead of deleting.

I recently discovered that Outlook for Android uses an intermediate server for IMAP connections , meaning that:
1. mail is accessed in plain-text by a third-party
2. credentials are known in plain-text by a third party
This defeats much of the purpose of encrypting IMAP connections in the first place, since the information is no longer private between the host server and the client.
As I was unhappy with this, I switched to Bluemail since I saw that they have an option to configure either push or fetch . However, I have now found that, regardless of how this option is configured, the account credentials are still held by the Bluemail server.
### Question
How can I connect to an IMAP server over TLS from Android without mail and credentials being shared with third party servers and providers?
Also, why has this become the norm, considering that the security implications are woeful.

Gmail and K-9 return nothing. BlueMail returns and error. My mail provider is JustHost. As search is working under the web mail service, they say the server hasn't got any problem.
Is there a general issue in IMAP search? it's quite frustrating not been able to search my mails from my phone.
My device is a Nexus 5x with android 6.0.1

Using the stock mail app on a Galaxy A5 2017, though this also happened on my Galaxy S6.
The account is using IMAP. I've tried deleting and re-adding the account and it doesn't help.
