I had flashed Android 6.0 Marshmallow in My Nexus 5. As a part of a rooting process , I had to flash the kernel to allow SU binary to work.
All is fine and root works well.
Kernel is a intangible software component. How can I know the name and version of the kernel that I am using on my phone after installing it? I mean if I do not remember from where I downloaded the kernel or do not have the its ZIP file, are there any means with which I can find the kernel's name and its version?

Just recently I noticed on my Nexus 7 that when I start some apps - and it's not just those allows to have superuser rights - I can briefly see a "red frame" all around the screen area of the app that goes away in a second or maybe a little less.
Does anyone know where this comes from and in particular what it means?
Note: as you probably guessed from the contents, my device is rooted. Also note that it's well possible that one of the installed apps is responsible for this, yet I don;t know which. But I'd like to know.

I installed Z4root on my Galaxy S (the original, not the S II) after reading this post , using the APK file attached to the post (can't find it in market). The thread leads me to believe that the process is as simple as installing, switching USB debugging on and pressing the root button. Not in my case.
Results:
1. First time, the app didn't get further than the "running root exploit" message (waited 30+ mins)
2. After rebooting the phone out of desperation, when I press the permanent root button it gets as far as the "acquiring root shell" message and the app either just disappears (with no results) or the app stops working and I get the force close window.
I've tried this many times with reboots in between, both plugged in and unplugged and no different results. Do later SGS models have some anti-root hax built into them? Have I missed something obvious about the process?
Extra info:
- The phone does not have three button recovery mode
- The author of the app claims to be from the same country as me, and his phone is also SGS running Froyo. If we are cursed with weird "international" hardware I would've expected the same to happen to him.
- The thread talks about a superuser app being installed after the phone reboots. I already had Superuser installed (but never been able to use it because I haven't successfully rooted ever). I uninstalled the app and tried z4root again, but nothing different happened.
- The thread suggests using adb logcat to get debugging info, but logcat spews an endless stream of info that is much longer than the examples I've seen in the thread (long enough that my terminal buffer loses the top info before it finishes). What I can see doesn't seem like it is related to z4root.

I have an unrooted *Galaxy S Vibrant* and I was trying to root it permanently with z4root, unsuccessfully. While I try to do it permantly it seems to do it, but when I try to run *Titanium Backup* or any app that requires root permissions, it won't gain privileges. So, I installed a terminal app, and when I tried to run the
su
command it displays a command not found
error.
My question is, what is missing from the OS? Any Idea? I know that you must have to be root in order to run certains commands but in that case it should display another error message?

Is z4Root infected?
I downloaded One Click Lag Fix and it requested z4Root, I also downloaded from the computer, because it was not on the market and installed, but AVG reported me that is infected. I downloaded with multiple sites including xda-developers, and all were infected. Should I proceed with installation?

Recently I just downgraded my busybox to 1.18.2 version using the jRummy's BusyBox Installer. I was previously having busybox preinstalled by CM7.2 custom ROM.
Then I immediately tried to install the latest, 1.19.4 version using the same app..
It could have shown some error message, but I wasn't sure. Maybe the download didn't proceed fully. But now onwards, I am getting "No root" message when I try to launch the BusyBox Installer. I tried everything, forgetting the app from SuperUser (by chainsfire) app and reauthorizing root for it, clearing data, rebooting the phone etc.
Apps like link2sd also cannot get "root" privileges all of a sudden!!
Strange thing is, z4root app detects my phone as already rooted. And when I try to click "re-root", the process goes on and on and nothing happens.
Why has this happened? Is this because JRummy's busybox overwrites the CM7.2 build one? Should I never try updating busybox when I'm on CM7.2? or is it because I have to specify correct path? /system/xbin in that busybox installer?
Now all I need is to make busybox and more importantly, get my root back to work properly hopefully without having to reinstall my ROM. Any ideas?
Huawei IDEOS u8150 running Cyanogenmod 7.2-RC1
Update : I tried rooting/unrooting etc using SuperOneClick v 2.3.3.0. It doesn't work either. Here's its log (apparently there are lots of "illegal instruction" errors where it shouldn't be):-

OTA Gingerbread 2.3 update fails to install on DroidX (rooted stock Froyo 2.2.1 / unrooted back)

I was trying to install the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) OTA update available from Verizon for my Droid X.
However the update ALWAYS fails to install. It downloads fine, pops up a message saying that the update (**4.5.605.en.US**) is about to install and needs a reboot, then reboots when I OK it.
**After the reboot, it pops up "Update Status: The Software Update Failed" error box.**
----------------
My only possible suspicion as far as the reason is that my DroidX is rooted via z4root - I posted a separate question on how to un-root it ( https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/15760/is-there-an-easy-way-to-un-root-android-2-2-on-droid-x-rooted-via-z4root ) in case that suspicion is true.
**UPDATE** - I unrooted using latest z4root version. The problem with OTA was NOT fixed.

The reason is that I would like to apply a Gingerbread 2.3 update from Verizon, and that update ALWAYS fails to install.
Since I never had a custom ROM on the phone, my first guess is that the problem may be due to being rooted, but I don't see an "Unroot" option in z4root.
Please note that factory reset is NOT an answer I'm looking for.
