I recently basically bricked my phone by trying to mount the data part of the recovery file created by Nandroid (of the stock os) while CyanogenMod 10 was installed. I updated my AT&T Captivate to the stock Gingerbread a few weeks ago, and I've had nothing but problems since -- hangs, lockups, and that constant TetheringManager crash. I'm about to do a factory reset, but I'd really like to be able to back it up properly first, which of course requires root. I've done a little research, and SuperOneClick definitely does *not* work in my situation. I've seen some people refer to flashing a new kernel, but a) I've never done it, b) it sounds a bit scary, and c) I don't need anything else out of a custom kernel, other than root access. Is that my only way forward in this situation? (I found [this similar question](https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/19227/rooting-samsung-captivate-with-the-new-gingerbread-release) , but people seem to have ignored the "how do I root" part once they figured out that the OP didn't *need* to in the first place)

Here is a video posted by someone else which shows the same problem I'm facing. I'm guessing that I messed up the bootloader and I need to reflash/fix it somehow but can't seem find a specific targeted tutorial/guide for this issue. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Voice Control for Android 2.1
I have a Bluetooth speakerphone for my car (BlueAnt). It uses a phone's built in voice control. When I try to use it, it says that voice control is not supported by my phone (AT&T Samsung Captivate, Android 2.1). Is there a way I can get voice control (over Bluetooth) on my phone?

As far as I can tell, I can't get the iPad to make an ad-hoc wifi network on its own. If I had mobile data, I could turn on the Mobile Hotspot feature, connect all the iPads to the phone. I think if I did this now, though, my SIM would be charged for any stray Internet requests that are accidentally made. Is there a simple way to do this?

Like most Samsung Captivate users, I find the GPS hardware in my phone to be unsatisfactory. I have the impression that the actual GPS signal is pretty much useless and the phone (Samsung Captivate) gets location via wifi signals only. I heard that you can flash modems to improve the GPS. They are often posted on xda-developers without much information for newbies, like [here](http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227717) . Since I've never done it before, I thought I would ask for some information. Can I just choose a modem and install it on top of the custom ROM that I'm using? Or do I have to get a ROM that has the correct modem inside? [This](http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057574) is the rom that I'm currently using which works fine for my device.

My captivate's power button was acting up a few weeks ago. But the other day it just completely stopped working! I either have to plug it in to my charger or completely take my phone apart and take the battery out and put it back in. It's weird because it's like the power button is stuck or something. The power off screen comes up and I don't know it's just frustrating. What can I do to repair it? Is it worth repairing? Should I wait for my upgrade in June and go on with this problem? or Should I just throw the phone away and go without it until june? Please help! Thanks!

My Gmail app recently stopped working. I'm on a SGS Captivate running [this custom ROM](http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462035) -- while I realize there might be some ROM-specific glitch, I thought I could ask here for general troubleshooting tips. I stopped getting new emails last week, so I cleared the app cache, toggled sync off and back on, then finally uninstalled and re-installed the app. Nothing seems to make any difference -- mail will not sync, sitting at the "Waiting for sync" message with a blue spinner for hours. Am I missing anything? Is there any way to get a handle on what exactly is going wrong here?

Where do i find cwm recovery for samsung captivate?
I rooted my 2.3.5 and then returned my Samsung Captive i897 to stock 2.1 update 1 ROM. But now I want to put cyanogen 9 ICS -- but the CWM recovery does not work anymore. Where do I find one for 2.1? Kies does not want to update my phone to gingerbread. Eclair has no good apps, NONE, I am bored.

My Samsung captivate was running the latest version of Android available to it which is 2.3.5 Gingerbread. I rooted it by installing ClockworkMod Recovery, (flashing zImage using heimdall on Ubuntu), I then installed CyanogenMod 10. It worked up until the point I went and tried to restore the data or db data(can't remember) part of the backup I made in CWM. This broke the ROM I had to revert to a stock ROM I found. Firmware version: 2.1-update1 Baseband Version: I897ucjf6 I then tried to restore the custom ROM to no avail. The CWM recovery log said something to the extent of I can't re partition the device or mount the device due to a bad sector. The long and short it did not work. When I start the phone normally, it does not boot. When I hold 2 vol keys the screen looks as if a VGA cable is not connected properly - everything is colorful, but distorted (no text is recognizable). Is there a way to get an official (or official-ish) version of Android 4.1 on my phone, preferably using Odin 100% of the time so I am not having to boot into recovery and apply update from zip (Although I can do this if needs be). Should I use Kies Mini to update to Gingerbread and try again? Should I just forget about my Android 4.1 dream? I followed [this](http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide) guide the first time I rooted the phone. I downloaded CyanogenMod 10 from their seemingly official website under the Samsung Captivate section.

So I have one that is rooted and unlocked and a clean one. Can someone help me unroot it knowing I already did a factory reset on it. I'm trying to root it again (thinking the unroot will work) and I'm trying the same way I did it the first time but it doesn't work. Is it possible to format the old one with some image made from the new one? Any suggestions?

> **Possible Duplicate:** > [How can I prevent my WiFi connection from glitching?](https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/14162/how-can-i-prevent-my-wifi-connection-from-glitching) I have consistent hanging/speed issues with my Apps when I use WiFi compared to 3G. For instance, last night, I played a move with Word With Friends and the app said "Sending Move...". It sat there for a while so, out of curiosity, I just turned the display off and went to bed. When I turned the display on that morning, I still saw the "Sending Move.." screen. I closed the app, turned off WiFi (thereby enabling 3G) and then loaded WWF. The move sent instantly. Other WiFi apps do the same thing; Facebook for instance hangs constantly on WiFi. Also, there are times I open up the browser and it responds with "Can't connect"...even though the icon at the top of my screen says I'm connected to WiFi. Usually, if I take the battery out, put it back in, let the phone reboot, WiFi resumes back to normal. However, this is cumbersome. I realize it could be a router issue though I have other devices connected to my router and they work fine 100% of the time. (One of the other devices is my wife's iPhone :P) Is there a way I can pinpoint what the issue is? Or, even better, have you had this problem and have a fix for it?

The download goes pretty quickly until it reaches 99%. At that point it is just stuck (I've waited about 20 minutes so far). I have tried to hit cancel and then resume. This just restarts my phone, goes to a white screen with an update bar, and hits 50% before the update fails and it boots normally. What could be wrong and how can I get the standard OTA update to work?

I notice that when I reboot my Samsung Captivate, it runs smoothly for about 2 or 3 days. After that, I notice that there is a lot more lag with various apps, and the launcher screen is more likely to die and restart, mostly after running the browser. After I reboot, it seems to behave fine. Today was one of those days where I needed to restart. I also noticed that the battery drained much more quickly today (down to 45% after 3.5 hours). Looking at battery usage stats, Android OS used 41% of the battery. From talking to friends, battery usage issues are fixed temporarily by a simple reboot. From other questions on here, people who have issues with lag use various type tools like Watchdog, only to see Android OS using most of it. Is the battery usage issue and occasional lag issues related? Is this an issue that is fixed in 2.3.4, or a subsequent version?

Occasionally and frequently at inconvenient times (in the middle of important Angry Birds games) I get a screen that says: Device management Software update Congratulations! New software update for phone installed. Phone is ready for use OK I click OK and it goes away, but it always comes back. Is my phone really being updated this often. I doubt it. It always reports the same version, Eclair. Even if it was, I don't want to be notified like that. How can I stop this?
