Is it still possible to select the location mode which doesn't require you to turn on gps? Back then one could select battery saving mode which used WiFi scanning or mobile networks to detect location, albeit not very accurate when compared to using gps. In Android 13 by using tasker or modifying secure settings database this is still possible, but it still turns on gps which is undesirable. Is there a workaround that strictly relies on WiFi scanning or cell towers? I thought to use a different location provider Unified Nlp, however the device is not rooted so I can't patch it to system in order to use LocalGSMBackend or similar, so am basically stuck.

GPS: No Satellite Reception
The GPS on my LG V35 has completely stopped functioning. I've verified this with the GPS Test app, and done a phone-beside-phone comparison using GPS Test on both. The GPS on my LG V35 has completely stopped functioning. I've verified this with the GPS Test app, and done a phone-beside-phone comparison using GPS Test on both. Score: - Test-phone (Galaxy S10): GNSS Status=3D Fix, 29 satellites in view with 23 in use. - My LG V35: GNSS Status=No Fix, 0 satellites in view. **History**: Bought LG V35 in early 2022, pre-rooted (Magisk), Android 9. Phone worked flawlessly (including using Waze regularly) for over 2½ years. Then, a couple of months ago, Waze started losing GPS for minutes at a time on regular routes; then losing it for whole days; then permanently. Throughout, my wife's Waze worked fine. But then we traveled to Florida, and, weirdly, Waze worked again on my phone while we were down there. Returned to NY five days later: GPS gone, no satellites. **Tried**: every remedy recommended for "GPS fix," "no location," etc., including clearing data of Location Services, and following GPS Test app's recommendation: shutdown phone, go outside, power up, Clear and Update AGPS. How does one even approach a problem like this?

I'm on a POCO phone M4 pro 5G, running MIUI Global 12.5.8 Android 11 RP1A 200720.01 Sometime I face this annoying problem which apparently no-one experencied on the internet. If I'm sharing my connection via WI-FI Hotspot, at a point it may stop working as the button turns off. This may happen once or twice every week randomly (not linked to battery saving mode). Once the hotspot button toggled off, I coudn't get toggle it on again not even by restarting my phone. As soon as I touch it, it toggles off again. This problem may go away by itselfs in a matter of minutes or hours. I've never notice before but tonight this thing happenend and I got an error saying my GPS wasn't on anymore. When checking the position button it was toggled off as the hotspot one. I coundn't get back neither of them. After 30 mins without any restart they started to work again. What could be the problem... and the solution? Thanks

On the surface, this is same question as this question , but I've made the changes according to that question's accepted answer and I still cannot get latitude to auto-update unless I have an app using GPS open. If I fire up Google maps or MyTracks, a location is sent. but once I close or switch to a new application, my location no longer transmits. It has been like this for several weeks. My Android version is 2.2.1. GPS is on, but the GPS icon doesn't appear until I start an app that uses GPS. I actually seem to remember that being a requested feature for an earlier version of android (1.something). Am I missing something else? More data: Google maps version 4.5.0 (#4519) 5.0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAh4yiCzgKw I guess I'll need to retest and see if I still have the issue)

I will be happy to find a solution, preferably with offline maps, in order to minimize external data dependency.

Apparently Android Auto can either use the GPS in the connected head unit or the GPS in the mobile device itself. As I understand, Android Auto will always prefer to use the GPS in the connected head unit. (which makes sense: typically has better antenna reception, doesn't drain the mobile unit's battery, etc). How can I tell which one is being used ? When the phone is in the car, I put it in "The Grotto" below the climate control and connect it via USB. I call it "The Grotto" because it is really deep and I'm thinking there's no way a GPS can reach in there. Yet my Android Auto works fine and never loses GPS signal. So something else must be going on.

Lego offers an Android app that allows control a Lego train using bluetooth. It does not work on my non-GPS tablet and emits the error message “could not get permission to get device location”. Lego told me that they are not interested in the location information (the app discards that data) but also that this means that their app cannot work on such a device, which is an Android limitation that cannot be circumvented by Lego. I know that Android ties bluetooth and location permission, however, I am surprised that no solution is possible. After all, this is a ridiculous situation: Bluetooth is there, but unusable because no GPS? Of course, Bluetooth headsets work on my tablet, but this may be due to a different device profile. I need to know whether Lego is right and Bluetooth to e.g. a toy is impossible on Android without GPS?

However, once I gave the "Carrier Service" access to the precise location to my device, it fixed the issue. Do you folks know why? I'm assuming that it has something to do with A-GPS.

I've not found any information of how to run a service on a rooted device **under root.** I've found some about running some commands in a service under root, though, but it may be only a part of what I need. How to do it? *update #1* * By "service" I mean "a class inherited from Service" * I am not aware about the differencess **in my case** in regards to an init service, a framework service, or just a normal background process. However, I need it to run forever. I guess that it'd be an init service. * It should be be restarted if it fails, or it it gets, for some reason, killed by the system. * It's written in Kotlin. Which is to say, in Java * As I've mentioned, I've rooted my device

There's a strange situation with Citymapper, where it doesn't access GPS location directly, but it does if a different app is accessing location at the same time. This hasn't always been the case, but I'm not sure exactly when it started (so, can't say if it's because of a certain update etc.). **Problem details**: - I'm using Citymapper 6.23 on LineageOS 14.1. - The Location permission is for Citymapper is turned on - "Location mode" is set to "Device only" (i.e., GPS only), although I've tried turning "High accuracy" on to test, and it doesn't fix the problem. - I have Privacy Guard enabled on Citymapper, but access to location is allowed, and as before, disabling Privacy Guard for Citymapper doesn't fix the problem. Citymapper "thinks" it's accessing location, but it's not: I say this because when I disable the location marker for the device (screenshot below), Citymapper complains that "Your location is disabled". !location marker for the device When location is on, Citymapper doesn't complain (so, it thinks it's working), but I know it's not accessing the location for three reasons: 1. the location Citymapper shows is incorrect (it shows the last "known" location -- see below for details) 2. the location marker doesn't appear at the top of the screen as it would when an app is using geolocation 3. in the system settings > Location, "Recent location requests" are shown, but Citymapper is not on that list. Further to this, Privacy Guard reports that "Fine location" is being accessed by Citymapper every time I use the app, but it says that GPS was last accessed on 26 December 2017 (Privacy Guard controls separately access to "GPS", "Coarse location" and "Fine location"). **Indirect access**: The weirdest part is that when I open a different application that uses geolocation (in this case, MapFactor Navigator) and the location marker does show up at the top of the screen, the correct location does show up in Citymapper as well (this is my current workaround, and this is how Citymapper gets the last known location I mentioned above). What could be causing this, and how could I go about fixing it? As I've mentioned, it used to work but started having this problem a while back (perhaps around the 26th of December, since that was the last GPS access). I haven't seen this with other apps, but then again, I don't have a lot of apps with location access. **System details**: - Device: Samsung Galaxy S5 Duos (SM-G900FD) - OS: LineageOS 14.1 - Android version: 7.1.2 - The phone is rooted with SuperSU. Note: There's no "Citymapper" tag (and I'm a newbie), so I used the generic "applications" tag. Maybe a senior user can fix this.

I have a tablet (no phone network, just WiFi) running Android 12. In the Settings | Date and Time sub-dialog when I select Automatic date & time, there is a 3 way choice: - Use network provided time - Use GPS provided time - Off What does the first option mean? It sure sounds like NTP, but there is no interface to pick a NTP server. Some wifi routers provide a NTP server address with their DHCP replies, but I don't think mine does, and in any case a mobile device can't rely on that, right? Strangely on my phone, also Android 12, the Automatic Date & Time widget is just a binary switch, on or off (though the phone definitely has GPS). I think "on" here means the mobile network. But how come this interface differs between two devices with the same Android release?

It would be nice if I could just copy all data relative to a particular city before going there for tourism. The Google Maps app does not store maps reliably, so it is risky to rely on it without an Internet connection.

*Not sure if this is the right place to ask this kind of question, so please let me know if this thread should be moved to another SE board.* ### The problem For about two years now, I keep getting very weird behavior when having my apps query my GPS coordinates: **apps keep locating my phone at a place I haven't lived or been in years**. This belongs all sorts of apps that rely on GPS, starting at Organic Maps, Home Assistant, even Google Maps tends to locate me at that certain location. **The problem only occurs when my phone doesn't find a satellite to acquire accurate GPS coordinates.** ### Some background information - I moved from town X to town Y about 3 years ago - I signed a fresh contract with my internet provider using only my new address (in town Y) - When moving, I had a Galaxy S9 with "stock" Samsung Android installed on it, connected to my Google account which had my old physical address saved. Back then, GPS tracking worked like a charm - at some point after moving, I decided to install /e/OS (for privacy reasons obviously; fork of LineageOS) and get rid of everything connected to Google - I even deleted my Google account and changed my real name and address inside my Google account before deleting it - after installing /e/OS, I used microG to have a *random* Google account (necessary for Google Play Services) for usability reasons - eventually, I decided to buy a new mobile (Galaxy S10e) purging everything and installing /e/OS as well before connecting it to any possible internet account - I bought a new pre-paid cell phone card which is registered with my new address (town Y) So basically, I changed my place of residence, changed mobile phone cards, changed mobile phone, changed internet contract, changed my mobile operating system and purged my Google account (and didn't even once connect it to my current mobile phone), thus my phone should be **unable** to have **any** information about my old flat's address, or is there something I left out here? When moving outside or driving (or being navigated through Organic Maps, for example), apps sometimes locate me at that same location in the beginning, but when getting a good GPS signal, it changes to my real location. It seems like that certain old address from town X is somehow stored in my phone or location history or somewhere else, I just can't figure out where it could possibly be stored. I have no accounts linked with my phone which know any of my addresses, **how is this possible**? I am incredibly grateful for any thought on this, it's driving me crazy. Thanks in advance.

The above solutions did not work for me because I was testing on an Android device with the latest Google Play Services version. I'm using a linux laptop, so I cannot use all kinds of apps for PC and Mac which you then connect to your android device with a usb cable. I've also tried using VPN + fakeGPS to the same location - but that didn't work as well. Is there other solution for debian user + android user (pixel 7, latest android version)?
