Why does my phone still think that the internal storage is full?

I tried to install CWM and connect with ADB, but USB debugging isn't turn on, so I can't connect with ADB at all. Is there some way to root my phone via recovering mode (with CWM) so I can turn on USB debugging and work with ADB? Maybe there is some easier way to recover my data? I thought e.g. about connecting keyboard to my phone, so I can unlock it and normally connect via USB, but my phone doesn't support OTG :/ any ideas?

A friend has a factory fresh, unrooted Samsung Galaxy S Duos, and except for Whatsapp every other internet accessing app works fine on a 3G or EDGE connection. She has un/reinstalled Whatsapp several times. It works fine over Wifi. She's no power user, so any solution involving rooting the phone is not an option. To clarify - there is nothing wrong with 3G or EDGE on her phone, since she can browse the internet and use other such apps perfectly fine. **Update** - She's on Vodafone, as I and thousands of people in India are, and no, Vodafone is not blocking Whatsapp for any reason. Searching for solutions on Google only leads to 'No shit, Sherlock!' type answers with genius level solutions like 'check whether your 3G connection is working' or 'get the latest version of Whatsapp'. So is there a workaround?

I am getting a "WARNING: Control transfer #1 failed. Result: -9" problem that looks like it might be causing a failure for heimdall to flash a recovery to my Samsung Galaxy S Duos GT-S7562 phone. I am running Ubuntu 13.04 (raring ringtail) and Heimdall v1.4 RC1. I have the phone unplugged and off. Then I turn it on to "download mode" and then press the up key to accept the download mode option. Then I plug it into the usb cable to the computer. Then I run the heimdall detect program and find that the device is detected. Then I run the following to install the custom recovery. I obtained the "recovery.img" file from a "recovery.tar" file that I got from a root kit zip file. Is there a way to get around this error? What does "-9" mean as an error code? ~$ sudo heimdall flash --RECOVERY /tmp/recovery.img --verbose \ Heimdall v1.4 RC1 Copyright (c) 2010-2012, Benjamin Dobell, Glass Echidna http://www.glassechidna.com.au/ This software is provided free of charge. The camera is good, but its flash is so strong that after the photo we have to wait for 1 or 2 minutes to our eyes be able to see all clearly - it is like to when you see the sun light directly. So I would like to change flash brightness in some way: hardware or software. The easier but ugliest hardware way is to use a semi-transparent sticker in front of lens. Do you know any way to change flash brightness entering some hidden settings (common settings do not have that option) or using another settings app or camera app? The phone is not rooted, but I accept solutions in this way.
