For some reason, when driving focus is enabled, and Siri is connected to my car’s Bluetooth, Siri is not audible. For the longest time I thought that driving focus was busted entirely because the screen would light up, the Siri animation would flash for a while, but would not do anything. I eventually figured out that it was responding, asking for a follow up yes or no or the like, but since I wasn’t giving it a confirmation, it would just time out. Volume on maps, Waze, music is fine, just Siri. Pressing volume up on either the car or the iPhone does nothing while Siri is speaking.
If I put in earbuds, then I can now hear Siri talk, and everything seems to work… But how do I get the volume on Siri to work with my car’s Bluetooth? It is a 10-year-old Toyota, no CarPlay, fairly dumb audio on the car (‘press talk button and say yes to confirm”)

I'm trying to build a Shortcut for switching to Do Not Disturb for a given number of minutes. Afterwards, the previous Focus mode should be restored.
For example, I have a mode called "Work". When starting the Shortcut and providing 1 minute as input, I want it to switch to Do Not Disturb for 1 minute, and switch back to Work afterwards.
My problem is that restoring the previous Focus mode does not work. Instead, DND turns off as expected, but then it turns on DND again, and not the previous Focus mode.
Here's how my Shortcut currently looks:
I added Speak as debug output, and it correctly outputs "Work" for the example described above, both before prompting for input, as well as after waiting till DND is over.
I also added additional 10 seconds of waiting, to make sure I'm not running into race conditions, but that doesn't change anything.
Does anyone know how to restore the previous Focus mode correctly?

With macOS Sequoia with multiple monitors, how can I make apps open new windows on the screen where the mouse currently is?
I drag certain windows onto the secondary monitor (grep-ing a log in terminal, playing a video in youtube etc) and when I close the last window of the app on the main monitor, select the app from dock on the main monitor and click "cmd-n" for a new window, it gets opened next to the remaining active window of the app on the secondary monitor.
This makes no sense to me.

Is the symbol listed? Am I allowed too use it? Is it intentionally excluded?

I'm setting up a new MacBook Pro with macOS Ventura. I'm excited about the new Focus Modes, and created a custom mode called Video Conferencing.
My goal is for the Focus Mode to turn on when I'm running Zoom or Skype, and to turn off when I quit those applications.
Looking at the UI, it seems clear that's how it's supposed to work:
Video Conferencing will turn on when zoom.us is opened and turn off when it's closed.
While it is turning on when I open Zoom, and off when I close Zoom, it's also toggling every time I put focus on a different app, or come back to Zoom.
How do I keep the Focus Mode enabled while the app is running, and automatically disabled when the app closes?

I've setup work focus and bedtime DND. I want a few other iOS users to _see_ that I have a focus set in iMessage (eg.
🌜 Nick has notifications silenced
), while still allowing those messages to bypass the focus and notify me (haptic when on silent, ringtone when not). My phone is pretty much always set to silent.
I see two options:
1. The "Allow Notifications" list for each focus
1. A contact's "emergency bypass" setting for texting/calling.
Problems with these:
Once I add a contact to the allow list on the focus, they don't appear to see that I have a focus set at all. They don't see the "has notifications silenced" message.
If, instead, I add the contact as an emergency bypass, they *do* see my focus status, but it plays the text/ring tone when in silent. This is annoying. I could set a custom silent ringtone for them but when *not* on silent I'd want it to ring.
So, unless I've missed something it doesn't look like I can have someone aware of my focus but also receive their notifications in the way I want while in that focus.

What I want
--
I have the Work focus scheduled during my work hours. I have several work-related apps that I would like to allow notifications from only whenever I happen to have the Work focus on. Otherwise, I don't want to hear from them.
What I tried
--
1. Disabling the notifications for these apps under Settings → Notifications and then specifically whitelisting them in the Work focus settings. This didn't work because, I guess, Notifications settings have priority and a focus can't overwrite them.
2. Considered re-enabling notifications for these work-related apps and then scheduling the Personal focus for hours outside work, where I would disable them. But that sounds too much because I don't really need a focus for my personal time (except for this issue). I am not sure what other restrictions it would impose and it would show up to other people in iMessage as if I do not want to be disturbed.
So is there a way to allow specific apps only during a specific focus and mute them otherwise?

macOS Safari somehow allows unfocused tabs to regain focus. This can be very annoying as tabs keep changing in the middle of doing something else.
One such example is https://www.kiwi.com
On this flight search website, just search for a flight and on the flight list page leave the tab open, change to another tab and do your thing. In a few minutes, you will see the kiwi.com showing up an in-page JS popup titled with "Get fresh prices" and the that tab will regain focus, regardless of which other tab you are active on.
Considering it's common to search for flights with multiple tabs, you can see how a behaviour like this can be quite annoying. Regardless, a website should not be allowed to modify tab the focus behaviour while inactive.
- Safari Version 17.4 (19618.1.15.11.12)
- macOS 14.4
Everything is up to date but I have the issue at least for a year since switched to Safari, finally it bothered me enough to look for an answer.
Is there a way to stop Safari from allowing the tabs to change focus?

Since upgrading to Sonoma (currently on 14.3 (23D56)), focus is lost when a notification is received. This is driving me absolute mental.
It's pretty much making apps unusable - specifically when playing a game in fullscreen, notification banner is shown and suddenly, the app has lost focused. I'll have to interact / re-focus the app manually to get back.
I don't want to turn notifications off, but would accept changing things as needed to prioritize focus and still having some visible notification.

Examples of what I tried and it didn't work:
1.
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences AttentionPrefBundleIDs 0 && killall Dock
1. [enable_disable_do_not_disturb.sh](https://gist.github.com/vkavun/c9aa9c79a38a60ac1232)
1. [Proper “Do Not Disturb Mode” on Mac](https://kashour.com/proper-do-not-disturb-mode-on-mac/)
I will be happy with advice for a script or app that will sort this enabler of focus runs in macOS Sonoma.

I would like to have a similar 'Focus' with its duration configurable, such as 2 hours or so.
But looking into the settings, it seems that one can only 'schedule' a Focus like from 13:00 to 14:30. This is rather different from the duration-only thing.
How to do this?

# What happens
When I use VoiceOver (VO) together with Firefox (FF) (doesn't matter if I have all extensions disabled, even tried to run it with a completely fresh install of FF developer edition.) Then the VO focus seems to have an offset applied to it that puts it out of alignment with where the focus _should_ be (the FF focus gets it right). I have tried to supply a picture of what happens (It's a picture of the screen due to the fact that it's hard to take a screenshot of VO focus).
# What I tried
## check if the issue exists on _other_ browsers
I tried Chrome, and the issue is not present. In my head this isolates the issue to some interaction between Firefox and VoiceOver.
## Try with a _clean_ Firefox install
I tried to boot my existing FF holding down the

option
key, this puts it into [troubleshooting mode](https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/diagnose-firefox-issues-using-troubleshoot-mode) , so it runs without addons and customizations. Still the issue persists. In my head this isolates it to something between VO and "default" FF. So nothing I did to FF afaik.
## Try to reset VoiceOver
I've tried to delete all data I could find regarding VO itself (at least what I considered "safe to remove" through web search). This meant the preferences data related to VO in ~/Library/Preferences
.
To wipe this I did the following:
la -1 ~/Library/Preferences | grep -i voiceover | xargs rm -rf
Still the issue persists, and now is when I feel I'm running out of options on how to narrow this issue down any further. It seems to me to happen with "default" Firefox and (to my best effort) "default" VoiceOver. Other coworkers with the a mac do not have the same issue, so I think it's some setting somewhere on my mac that causes this. But again, I'm not sure.

Is there a way to configure an iPhone such that it is automatically in silent mode at a particular physical location?
The obvious approach is to use Work focus mode, which I can easily configure to automatically activate when I am at my workplace. But I can't figure out how to configure a focus mode so that it silences the ringer / notification sounds, _without completely suppressing the notifications themselves_. I only want it to do exactly what it would do if I manually switch the physical switch to silent mode: that is, vibrate and show notifications and notification dots, but not make any sound.

I'm using macOS 13.6 on a 2023 MacBook Pro with an M2 chip. When I switch workspaces (using the Ctrl+← / →), there is a delay of probably several hundred milliseconds (or maybe even a second) before a window on the new workspace acquires focus. For example, let's say I'm switching to a workspace with an open text editor. If I start typing right after hitting Ctrl+← / →, my first keystrokes will not be recognized. This is super annoying, I always have to wait a moment before doing anything when switching to another workspace.
This issue is not limited to text editors, it occurs with all keyboard input in every application I'm using. From Ubuntu, I'm used to immediately interacting with a window when switching workspaces. Any idea whether this can be fixed?

I found out with a python-script which prints out the name of the application currently in focus that it was

which stole the window-focus.
I already restarted the Mac multiple times and I don't know what else I can do.

Usually a Spotlight search presents choices, where clicking on one of the items found displays a Finder window with the item. I have probably been using this feature since I converted to Apple in 2009.
Starting with Monterey later versions, perhaps 12.4, when a Spotlight search displays a Finder window as described above, the Finder window is often not visible being behind other windows.
I was hoping that this problem would be fixed in Ventura. I upgraded yesterday to 13.4.1 but the problem still remains.
It seems that the problem is worse if there is a Terminal window open. I have seen some discussion of this issue that also refers to the issue being associated with the Terminal program, although usually in connections with Secure Keyboard Entry. That is not a factor in my case.
I have sent this as feedback to Apple.
