I have a 2005 PowerBook G4 which I dual-boot Mac OSX 10.5.8 and Ubuntu 16.04 XFCE. The 'book runs both OSs quite well but I have noticed that using Ubuntu has the effect of reducing the battery capacity quite qucikly. For instance today, my aftermarket battery was showing "full" at 64% but after using Ubuntu for 45 minutes it went to 0% and shut down. When I recharged it, it only went back up to 35%. This has happened before and I am writing this post from OSX while I re-calibrate the battery. Is there any way to use Ubuntu but be gentler on the battery? I normally use Ubuntu more than OSX as it is still getting security updates and I like some of the applications that run on it.
Update: The re-calibration seems to be stuck at 37% so not going very well.

I have a PowerBook G3 from 2000 or so and would like to put Mac OS 9 on it for nostalgia reasons. There are games that simply don't perform well with [SheepShaver](https://sheepshaver.cebix.net/) , plus networking with SheepShaver isn't reliable with Classic multiplayer games.
- The PowerBook doesn't have a CD-ROM, just a plastic spacer.
- Apparently the PowerBook G3 Pismo and Lombard variants cannot boot from a USB stick
- It has Ethernet, and I have a recent MacBook with an Ethernet dongle, but everything I've read about NetBooting and NetInstalling seems difficult and unapproachable. I tried using [BootMania](http://www2.tba.t-com.ne.jp/beanz/) but it won't let me create an image from any of the Mac OS 9 install disk images I have.
- The PowerBook originally had Linux or BSD on it or something, so a full reformat is needed.
- It has a 20 GB 2.5" IDE drive and I have a USB to IDE adapter, so I can connect the drive to the MacBook with Mac OS X.
- SheepShaver cannot use physical media, so I cannot connect the disk to SheepShaver and run the Mac OS 9 installer on it.
I tried creating a new 512 MB disk from SheepShaver and running the [Mac OS 9.2 Universal Installer](https://www.macintoshrepository.org/126-mac-os-9-2-2-universal-2013-edition-) to install OS9 on it. Then I formatted the physical drive with an Apple Partition Map and the partition as HFS Extended Journaled, then I mounted the drive and copied (dragged over) the files and System Folder from the newly-installed disk image. But when I boot the PowerBook with the drive hooked up I just get the blinking folder icon. If I hold Option I get the Reload and Next buttons but no disks are shown.
I also tried
dd
-ing a working SheepShaver boot image to the physical disk, but I guess that doesn't have a partition map on it or something. It didn't work and diskutil list
showed it as "Unknown."
Do you have any ideas how I can get Mac OS 9 back on my PowerBook?

I've got 2 PowerPC Macs, one is a 2005 Mac mini G4, the other is a 2002 PowerBook G4 Titanium. Both have Airport and Bluetooth cards installed and they work fine and both are OS X 10.5.8.
The Mac mini's BT card is built-in Apple and the PB's BT card is 3Com's PCMCIA card and its drivers are [http://www.traud.de/bluetooth](http://www.traud.de/bluetooth)
Because their Airport cards have limited range as they've got only one antenna, I've tried to connect to Internet over my Android 7 phone's 4.5G and Bluetooth and Bluetooth-Tethering.
On Mac mini G4 I've managed to easily connect to the Internet using Bluetooth Network method but on PowerBook, I get **The Bluetooth network is unavailable** error

On the Console, a new line appears (shortened and simplified)
[Req OpCode 1104 from: kernel_task (0) ... timeout: 10000] Bluetooth warning: An HCI Req timeout occured.
When I try to send a file from Powerbook to Android 7 phone, using the send file option at the Bluetooh icon, I can easily send files.
How to do a Bluetooth Network connection over this Android 7 phone?

I have a Powerbook G4 whose owner forgot her password.
(This is a Powerbook 6,8. The install disk says OSX 10.4 but I don't know if it's been upgraded.)
I can't insert the install disk into the optical drive (it encounters a solid resistance - I can't tell if there's another disk in there or not, but pressing Eject does nothing, and I don't see any hole in which to poke a paperclip to try to manually eject it).
I found a recommendation to:
- boot into single-user mode
- run **fsck -fy**
- **mount -uw /**
- **rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone**
- **reboot**
which supposedly would take me through creating a new (admin) user account, which I could then use to reset the owner's password. It rebooted, asked me what language I wanted to use, and after that, nothing (it briefly showed the spinning gear, changed the screen color a couple of times, showed the spinning gear, changed screen color, ad infinitum).
I did manage, from single user mode, to use Unix commands to verify that the owner's home directory still existed. I also inserted a flash drive into a USB port hoping I might use Unix 'cp' to copy the home directory onto it, but it didn't appear in the /Volumes directory.
Now the machine boots up to the window asking what language to use, and goes no further. And as I mentioned, the optical drive doesn't appear to work.
Before I go out and buy a FW 400-800 cable and a FW800-Thunderbolt adapter to try and mount the PB in firewire mode to my 2012 MBP, I wondered if someone could suggest any other things to try.
**UPDATE in response to Gordon Davisson**:
Output of **sw_vers**
- ProductName: Mac OS X
- ProductVersion: 10.4.11
- BuildVersion: 8S165
Output of **ls /dev/disk\***
- /dev/disk0 /dev/disk0s1 /dev/disk0s3
Output of **ls /dev/disk\*** after plugging in flash drive
- /dev/disk0 /dev/disk0s1 /dev/disk0s3 *(same)*
Output of **diskutil list**
- Command never completed! (I also tried rebooting and issuing command without flash drive inserted - same result.)
I reran **fsck -fy** but got a clean bill of health.
**[UPDATE]**: There is no disk in the optical drive, but a mechanical "stop" that is apparently designed to hold the CD in has moved into place as if a CD were there. This is what is preventing my inserting a CD.
**[UPDATE]**: All suggestions were useful but were stymied by other unforeseen problems (optical drive problem, etc.). I finally paid about $35 for a Firewire 400-800 cable and a Firewire->Thunderbolt adaptor, booted the laptop into FW target mode, and successfully copied the home folder (about 40GB) onto my Mac. The laptop may be a brick at this point, but the data is rescued. Mission accomplished.

Sometimes I can simply copy the DVD folder content, but that obviously doesn't work with encrypted DVDs. What is the best free DVD ripper for a Mac running OS X Tiger?

OS 10.4.11

2x512 MB sticks of RAM = 1 GB total RAM
I have tried several troubleshooting methods including different startup key combinations to reset power management, etc.
The laptop used to only boot up if it had sat for a longtime. If you turn it off and try to restart it wouldn't chime and it would just be a black screen.
One of the troubleshooting methods I have tried is booting with just one stick of ram and also swapping the ram into different slots. Ever since I flipped the ram sticks it still has to sit for hours to have a normal boot without just a black screen, but now it chimes every time.
One of the other things I tried was checking the integrity of the hard drive and it did have an issue, but I just safe mode booted it (shift + power button) and the hard drive now passes the disk utility test.
I have also done many tests to see if the battery is at fault and its not.
Please help.

My PowerBook G4 is broken and has been for a couple of months now. I owned it while it was working for about 1 and a half years. When it broke originally, I was restarting it after changing the boot logo in the system files and when it rebooted, it just stopped at the bright blue screen that I'm pretty sure comes right before the grey apple logo on a grey background. I left it for a while and it never finished booting. So I restarted it again and the same thing happened several times.
I then opened up the RAM removal door and saw that there appeared to be slight decay to one of the sticks of RAM. This may or may not be a problem. I removed the RAM and started it and the computer beeps as it should when it doesn't find the RAM when I put the RAM back in, the computer makes the chiming noise, but the screen does not turn on anymore. (By this I do mean that no part of the screen is lit. No backlighting occurs and pixels remain dead.) This is strange because before I removed the RAM, the screen turned on but stopped at the blue screen.
I also attempted hooking the computer up to another Mac via FireWire and repairing the hard drive. I then got a USB and put Leopard on it. I cannot boot from the USB either.
I have tried all of the obvious including resetting PRAM and resetting PMU. Neither of these had any effect on the computer at all. I even tried removing the main battery and letting the backup battery charge over night snd that also had no effect on the starting of the computer. I also tried hooking it up to a Mac display and that did not work either. That test may be unreliable, however, as I have not confirmed that the display itself works as I do not have the appropriate cables.
I am now at a point where I have the computer where it boots up, chimes, but the screen never turns on. I have the Leopard install image on a USB drive, and the hard drive is repaired. (Disk Utility said that it was corrupt and I repeaired it in Disk Utility as well.) I do not need the files that were previously stored on this computer. It previously ran OSX Leopard. Any other ideas on what I could try or what could be going wrong here?
I have previously thought about it being a Logic Board issue and this seems to be agreed by first answer I got. Are there any steps I can take to isolate whether or not it is the logic board? Is there any easy way to fix or replace it?
