One example is this page, originally in Japanese: http://immanuel.sakura.ne.jp/hoby/osakaben/osakaben.htm On desktop one can simply ask the browser to reload the page with a different encoding, but I don't see this option in many iOS browsers. Is there an iOS browser out there that allows the user to manually select the encoding?

As some people might know, the default behavior for external links of Google Chrome is quite bad. I'm using Spaces, and opening a link in some application outside of Google Chrome while being on a different Space than the last used window of Chrome results in Chrome switching to the last focused window. This behavior is just bad. I want to change this behavior. On Windows, this is possible: How can you configure Chrome to open new browser instances in new windows rather than in a tab? Sadly, I don't think this is possible on OS X Snow Leopard. I'm already using a tool called RCDefaultApps. This is a system-control panel where I can specify default applications for different protocols. It just lacks the feature to specify additional command line arguments for the default application. Can anyone help me there? Every hacks (aside from creating a custom Chromium build) are acceptable.

This is related to securing an application on a corporate network against certain types of access from personal PCs and mobile devices. Specifically we are able to require authentication from the users so we do know who they are. The current ask is just to block access to parts of the application from a mobile device. The application relies on the user-agent string to determine if it is being accessed through a mobile device. Is there a way, on a mobile device (e.g. iPhone, iPad, etc.) to spoof the user-agent string and if so, how would that be done?

I use the Logitech Trackman and love being able to scroll up or down with just a simple click of a button. enter image description here However, I would like to be able to scroll a page (usually webpage) when I reach the edge of a window, without having to click anything. So far I have looked into apps that could simulate clicking the scrolling button of the mouse, and scroll apps such as Smart Scroll, Smooze, Auto Clickers etc, but I wonder if there is an easier way because nothing I've found has worked quite how I wanted. I am using an older computer (running High Sierra), maybe Accessibility or Automator would allow me to do that but I haven't yet found out how. **Are there features of MacOS 10 that can be programmed to scroll on edge of pages, or easy ways to achieve this?**

I have encountered a rather bizarre macOS problem and I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this in the wild, or has any ideas on how to mitigate it. I've been a Mac admin for a very long time, and I've never before seen anything quite like this. **The Problem**: Very simply, on certain random websites, the helper/render agent of EVERY web browser immediately goes crazy, reaching and indefinitely remaining at 100% CPU or higher. **When First Observed**: Approximately January 2024 **What I've Tried**: - **Clean browser profiles** (this includes no browsing data, no extensions, etc.) - **Fully Uninstall/reinstall browsers** (except Safari, of course) - **Different browsers** (I've tried Safari, Edge, Brave, Chrome and Firefox) - **Different macOS versions** (I've reproduced this on macOS 11 [intel], macOS 12 [M2], macOS 14 [M2]) - **Different user accounts** (I even created a new one just to see what would happen, and there was no difference in the behavior) - **Different machines** (I've used an M2 MacBook Air, M2 Pro Mac Mini and 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro) - **Safe Boot** (This one shocked me, but even in Safe Boot with only essential macOS processes running, the behavior is still exactly the same) - **Clean macOS installs** - **All of the standard things not listed above which can be found on every blog** (disable hardware acceleration, change random setting X, Y or Z, etc.) You would think that all of the above would have led to at least some different combination of results, but literally nothing changed. For instance, the M2 Pro Mac Mini is a brand new machine and it does this straight out the box. Based on these variables and results, I can only conclude that this is something within macOS itself. It is clearly not isolated to a particular browser, browning profile, user account, machine or OS. We know that Edge, Brave and Chrome are essentially using the same Chromium engine, and thus have similar backend processes. It would therefore be logical to assume that if there's some kind of Chromium-based reactivity somewhere within macOS, they'd all display similar behavior. Yet, we see the same behavior on exactly the same websites with Firefox and Safari, two browsers with totally different engines and codebases. It could be something about how the operating system handles these rendering processes, but what could that be and how could it be corrected? I've attached screenshots of the runaway render processes in Edge, Firefox, Brave and Safari. Has anyone else observed this? Please let me know if you have any ideas or there's something I haven't thought of. Thanks for your help! Brave Safari Firefox Edge

I couldn't find a way to get the back button of my Razer mouse to work with both Safari and Chrome. I'm not using the Mac mouse, I'm using Mac mini with my Razer mouse. I installed the driver for that Mouse, unfortunately it only allows me to set the sensitivity and acceleration. I also tried to install Google Chrome, but it doesn't work either. When I click the side button of my mouse, it doesn't go back to the previous page. Under Windows, the default behavior of the back button in a mouse is to navigate back to the previous page, but it's not the case under Mac. I really try to find a solution since I'm so used to the "back" button in my mouse. I feel so uncomfortable when having to click on the back arrow on my browser. Is there software or a workaround for mapping third party mice buttons on macOS? enter image description here

I would like to use the desktop version of a particular site on an iPhone (iOS 15.6). I can confirm that many browsers do not universally force desktop view, but only do it on certain sites. That includes Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. So far, the only browser I have found that can do this is Opera. However, I can confirm by testing on two websites that Opera cannot upload files to an HTML "upload file" button. It launches the iOS view to select a file, and after you select one, the webpage does not receive it, and the field appears blank. I can still try the other iOS browsers that I know of: Tor, Brave, Insight, Aloha, and surprisingly many more available in the App Store. Does anyone know of any iOS browser that can force desktop view universally and also supports file uploads, or generally, complete desktop-like functionality?

I noticed an interesting case where a website had blocked me from accessing contents on Safari (Private Mode), switching over to Safari Technology Preview (Private Mode) resolved these issues. Either through a user-agent ban or stored cookies (which should be impossible since I'm on Private Mode), somehow regular Safari is not able to work. Does anyone know why a unique situation like this could occur? I'm wondering if it's because of cookies/identifiers stored somewhere inside my MacOS files causing the website to allow me to use it at all. I understand that using Safari Private does not allow cookies to "exist" after it shuts down. Even after rebooting my Macbook, clearing all Safari data, and emptying my caches, the website is still blocking me. However, using Safari Technology Preview fixes everything. Does Safari PT interact differently with websites? Is Safari Private actually keeping identifiable information even after closing out of it? Surely **some** information from Safari Private is stored somewhere, either deep in the files/folders of /Library or in RAM, which is why Safari TP works and Safari Regular does not. Weird situation, hoping someone can help me out.

Since Dark Appearance turns dark (or darker) many parts which used to be white (or brighter). However somethings are still not affected by the Light/Dark appearance control, i.e. this website. It is perhaps outside the boundaries of what the OS can do, I actually don't know. Is there someway we can tint the white? I would like to do it across all applications. If that's not possible perhaps I should keep using Light Appearance and reduce screen brightens. That would be and unfortunate solution though.

On my new M1 system I've decided to switch to the desktop Safari browser for battery, privacy, and security reasons. However, many websites are designed for Chrome/Chromium and it would be good to have a standalone browser available for such cases. I would like to avoid installing vanilla Google Chrome due to the ["Chrome is Bad"](https://chromeisbad.com) issue and the keystone background daemon process aggressively using CPU and memory even when Chrome is closed. - [Brave](https://brave.com) has a still-open issue requesting this from 2019. Based on the devs' responses it seems antithetical to their app. - [The option to turn ON / OFF Automatic Updates. Please](https://community.brave.com/t/the-option-to-turn-on-off-automatic-updates-please/194718) - [Add a "Disable autoupdate" feature (disable updates)](https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/5576) - [Edge](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge) seems to install a Microsoft AutoUpdate background daemon similar to Chrome's. - [Can I disable the (intrusive) Microsoft AutoUpdate in Edge? ](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/can-i-disable-the-intrusive-microsoft-autoupdate/1d51c81c-4ba8-4c26-b149-79b97cc4a900) - [New Update Experience for Mac available in Edge Beta](https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/new-update-experience-for-mac-available-in-edge-beta-dev-canary/m-p/2200983) It's ok if the browser "checks for updates" on launch (in a manner similar to the [Sparkle framework](https://sparkle-project.org)) . What I want to avoid is an always-running background daemon doing who-knows-what to my system, like Chrome's keystone updater does. Turning off auto-updates is also a needed feature on metered/limited cellular or satellite internet connections. Are there any shipping consumer macOS Chromium-based desktop web browsers that are self-contained, without an always-running resource-hogging update mechanism?

Since yesterday, I'm having a problem with auto update from Opera. Until yesterday I had no problem. I'm in OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5, and the last supported version is Opera 37.0.2178.54. Now it automatically updates to 48.0.2685.39 and after I close Opera I cannot open Opera again because it tells me “This version is not supported, you need 10.9”. In version 37, there is no preference setting to turn off autoupdate - you get it whether you want it or not. How can I stop Opera from auto updating? I want to be in version 37, which is supported in my operating system.

I know that iPadOS provides the Guided Access feature to limit access to a single app. Suppose that one single app is a web browser, either Safari or a third-party browser. Is there some way to limit the browser to a single web site? Or even better, a few specific sites in tabs? I am trying to assist an elderly person who simply wants to read one or two or three particular newspaper/magazine sites. They have no other use for the iPad, and would be overwhelmed with navigating the usual iPad experience. If links going outside my specified site could be suppressed, even better still. If not possible, then the Back button should take them back to the original web site I specified on that particular tab. If Safari offers this kind of feature, great. If not, I would be happy to pay for a third-party browser you can recommend that supports this kind of keep-it-simple experience for people with physical or cognitive limitations.

I am unable to stay signed in on Chromium and Google Chrome. I sign in to website A, close all tabs, open website A again, and am still signed in. I quit Chromium or Google Chrome, open website A, and have to sign in again. I believe the problem is from Chromium because I can stay signed in on website A on other browsers. I checked [this thread](https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/2211795?hl=en) and confirm that at chrome://settings/content/cookies, I have disabled Clear cookies and site data when you quit Chrome. That issue seems to continue unsolved. I am using Chrome 81.0.4044.138 and Chromium 766739. How can I stay signed in on a website with Chromium or Chrome? **Update**: I reinstalled Chromium and Google Chrome and have the same problem. I have since learned how to [inspect cookies](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3274875/how-to-get-cookie-expiration-date-creation-date-from-javascript) . On Facebook, for example, I have cookies that expire in 3 months: cookies before quitting browser After I quit and restart Chromium, all cookies from facebook are gone: no cookies after quitting browser Another problem that could be related is that each time I launch Chromium or Chrome, I get these two alerts, as if I were launching it for the first time: alert about incoming network connections alert about keychain access I believe this is a problem with the browser on this operating system because of these two alerts, and because Brave which is also based on Chromium does not give these problems. And for reference, my settings do not ask to clear cookies after restarting: cookie settings **Second update**: I updated Chromium (Version 86.0.4207.0 (Developer Build) (64-bit), 18 July 2020) and Google Chrome (Version 84.0.4147.105 (Official Build) (64-bit), 18 July 2020) and they both have the same problem. I verify that cookies are enabled, sign in to a website, quit the browser, go to the same website, and I am signed out, even though the website has cookies stored. Here is an example of cookies from StackOverflow saved on the browser, which looks the same for Chromium and Chrome: saved cookies **Note**: Moved to [SuperUser](https://superuser.com/questions/1575143/why-do-chromium-and-chrome-delete-sign-in-cookies-after-closing-the-browser) .
