In the last 2 months, my wife's data usage has ballooned for no clear reason, since her mobile habits and phone have not changed. In this billing cycle with a few days to go, the phone's mobile data usage utility shows what it states is "Google" used 3.12 gb out of a total of 4.06 gb. Everything else--Maps, Facebook, Spotify et al are distantly behind (nothing more than 0.24 gb). Background data usage is on and she will turn it off, following advice in other posts. 1. Is there any way of finding out what in Google is using all this mobile data? 2. Any recommendations on apps that can get more specific about what is using the data? Thanks for any help. David

I have a rooted device, and I want to use the internet via mobile data and let the LAN access via WiFi, but when the WiFi is connected, the gateway changes to WiFi. I have read similar answers like this which uses iptables, but I couldn’t get it working — likely due to my limited experience with iptables. Some suggested using AFWall+ and NetGuard, but that too didn't work. Now, I have managed to set up IPv4 access (i.e., I could access any IPv4 sites), and local access is also set, but only IPv6 is a problem now. I could ping IPv6 addresses, but for example, if I visit facebook.com, it wouldn't work. While modifying the hosts file to 2a03:2880:f184:186:face:b00c:0:25de www.facebook.com works, I need it to be done automatically by the default DNS server Would really appreciate it if someone could help me with it.

Is it possible to designate a Wi-FI SSID as metered "mobile network"?

I am wondering if there is a method by which I can designate a WLAN/WiFi connection as "mobile network" based on its SSID for the sake of data usage policies by apps or the Android system in general. Typically, when you have a data plan with your mobile provider, your phone's LTE (or 3G) modem will connect to the provider to enable you to have internet access. Now, if I am using a mobile LTE/WLAN router instead, my phone assumes that it's on an unmetered WiFi uplink and apps/the system will (mis)behave accordingly. Is there a way to tell the system that when it connects to a particular SSID, it should treat that as "mobile network" in regards to how apps may use data? Phone: Samsung Galaxy S9+ (SM-G965F), Android 9 NB: the settings from this answer don't exist on my phone.

Is there a way to warn or stop mobile data use when my home wifi is off?

Sometimes I'm at home but my wifi is off. Maybe I turned off the wifi on my phone and forgot to turn it back on, or maybe my home wifi really is down and I have to reset my router. Either way, my phone chugs along on mobile data and I only find out after I finish watching a video and realize that I wasted a good chunk of my mobile data cap. Is there a way I could add some guardrails here? I was hoping that there would be some way my phone could recognize that I'm at home (via GPS or by recognizing my SSID) and then be more judicious about using mobile data (maybe ask me if I really want to use mobile data at home, or show a warning...) If it matters, my phone uses Android 14. My internet searches didn't bring anything up. Most of the answers I could find were about preferring wifi over mobile data when both are available. But in my case the problem is that there are times when only mobile data is available but I'd prefer if the phone would ask me to turn on the wifi instead of silently using mobile data.

I recently upgraded my phone to android 13 and after the upgrade the mobile connection speed is very slow. On average it doesn't exceed 64 kilobytes per second. Some information about the phone that most likely don't matter: * It's a Xiaomi Redmi 4X * I'm using [Voltage OS 2.8](https://xdaforums.com/t/closed-rom-official-13-voltageos-santoni-eol.4535639/) which builds on Android 13 * Previously I used [Havoc OS 3](https://xdaforums.com/t/rom-official-ten-havoc-os-3-x-santoni-stable.4045593/) on Android 10, but this is too old now. Mobile data speed worked fine. Yes, I still got mobile data volume. And if not I would be capped to 56 kilobits per second. Yes I tested it over multiple days. What could cause this problem? Is there a secret setting for capping mobile speed that might be set? How could I debug this problem? Did I forget any important information? #### Edit on 2024-09-30 I flashed other custom ROMs, I flashed all official stock ROMs, I flashed new firmware, I flashed old firmware, I flashed every available official firmware, nothing changed anything. Even with every official stock ROM, the download speed is capped to 64 kB/s. Then I flashed Lineage 21 and gave up. Some time later the mobile data stopped completely. I had to permit apps to ignore the data saver. The data saver is disabled and always was disabled but permitting apps to ignore a disabled data saver did the trick. I got mobile data again and for about 50% of the time it goes over 64 kB/s. Sometimes it's throttled again for some hours, then it works fine for some hours. This whole behavior is just strange and I'm giving up now. #### Edit on 2024-10-30 The mobile data did not go over 64kB/s again. I bought a new phone, the mobile data is still capped to 64kB/s. I bought a new SIM card, the mobile data is still capped to 64kB/s. If I insert a friends SIM card, it works fine, if I insert my SIM card into other phones, it works fine. May this be a curse? What ingredients do I need to get rid of this? Holy water, sulfur, a crucifix?

I have Android 10 on my phone. In the 'Settings - SIM card & mobile data - Mobile Data - Network Permissions' menu, I have set wifi & mobile data access as "disable network" for some of my apps. The problem is, when I open such an app, it shows a notification "*App name* is Forbidden From Using the Network" with two buttons to choose from - "Keep disabled" or "Allow". This cannot be minimized or removed without choosing either of the two buttons. After choosing "Keep disabled", the nuisance does not go away. Each time the app is opened next, there is a toast informing "Network is turned off for *App name*. You can modiy this in *menu location*". This happens every time! And sometimes (probably after a reboot, not sure) Android 10 forgets the setting for that app and the mandatory notification comes again with the buttons to choose from. Can this behavior be prevented or at least minimized?

Obviously, I've defined SIM #1 to be the default SIM for calls and SMS, and SIM #2 to be the default SIM for data. When I'm in an active call on SIM #1, SIM #2 is automatically blocked. However, instead of using SIM #1 for data, the phone is simply not getting any mobile data at all. Any ideas on tackling this problem? Thanks.

The app/process "system updates" started using network data constantly a few days ago, also I think the battery is drained faster. Should I be worried about being hacked, or is this just some bug? And how do I make this stop? I'm using crDroid 9.0 (android 13) ROM (from here , I think) on Samsung S8. The first screenshot from android settings shows data usage in about 3 days. And the second screenshot from PCAPdroid app shows data usage in a few minutes, to see the IP adresses it connects to. Seems the IPs belong to google. Also, I think my phone is identified as pixel phone by google, maybe this has something to do with this, maybe google tries to update this "pixel phone".. But what seems weird is the data speed, which is always only a few KB/s, if google only tried to download pixel update files, I would think it could reach higher speeds. few days data usage few minutes data usage

I live a conflict area with internet blocked. I have Samsung a54 phone. They block your internet by blacklisting IPs assigned by certain towers on network registering. eg. 10.111.*.* is blocked while 10.67.*.* is internet enabled. When you come from another unrestricted area, already registered with an IP of that area, they let you use internet fine. And when you come to the restricted area it still works fine with all towers. That's until your device does re registers, either due to restart or the phone resetting network settings. If you re register at the restricted area towers, they will give you a not working IP. I have been forced to drive to other cities, register to a tower there, and come back. It works while the connection is still maintained, even in the restricted towers. Unfortunately, most modern phones and android versions try to "optimize" your internet and will auto reset, reconnect, switch network... and there is no way to stop them. And that will stop the internet and create new connection with the restricted towers, with new IP. I tried setting manual network selection, forcing 4g only with an app... Yet, they "optimize" it and reconnect anyway. But it all comes down to IP address, since I can use internet with some subnet of IP addresses. How can I make it retain, as if I can do manual IP address on a wifi and it works well? I already know they are dynamic. But looking for a way to force it and to make the device say "this is my IP" and get at least rejected, as you can do in any other networks, even DHCP wifi or ethernet networks, where you can give your device any IP and make it claim to have a given IP and the network will either reject or accept you. (most accept if there is no conflict or is in the subnet) You can find your cellular IP at Settings>About>Status>IP Address Edit: Happy to root my phone if there is any viable solution that way too.

I have a S8 android phone with microSD card where all my pictures are stored. Now I need to change phone, and I've just learned the recent phones don't have microSD slot and all goes to Cloud Storage like Google Drive. Except... Isn't Google Drive limited by, among other things, your capacity to access the Internet? What happens if you take a lot of pictures or videos somewhere where you don't have signal/internet reception? Does it not save the pictures or the videos? Furthermore, does the transfer of videos eat all of your data when you get signal back? Does it slow down the phone if you have shitty reception and you get off-on when it's trying to upload? The sellers in mobile shops were just able to answer 'It works.' and I need a bit more specifics... For information, I often need to go to places with no phone signal, that's why I have concerns.

It would be a handy alternative to Speedify VPN to bond separate mobiles, if the SIMs in those could be put in a dual SIM phone. (By the way, I don't have an financial interest or otherwise in Honest Mobile, nor Speedify). Thank you.

Since I just set up a VPN to my home server, I performed various tests and I found that, when I'm on cellular data, enabling or disabling AdGuard for Android (paid version) changes the IP detected by whatismyip.com or ipleak.net. Since I'm on mobile, neither one obviously matches my home IP. Today with AdGuard, for example, I could get 77.63.3.x which belongs to KPN, my provider, and an IPv6 address as well. Without AdGuard my IP is 77.63.6.x, again from KPN, but located in Utrecht. Another day the difference was "bigger", not even the first byte of the IPv4 matched. AdGuard is set to use a local VPN, since my Android is not rooted.

Is there a way to restrict which networks an app can use? For example, I don't want to use a location-based dating app (or similar, e.g. Snapchat) on my work/university/school network. I would prefer those apps to only access the internet from my home network (private) or cellular data (again private). This is to avoid legal issues, etc. I've set network settings to "restrict background usage" and also restricted networks. But as far as I can tell, this only stops apps from accessing the internet in the background. I'm using Android Lollipop on a Samsung in case that makes a difference. How should I go about restricting the particular networks (WiFi, cellular) that an app can access? Is there an app I need? Do I need to root?
