I am running out of Ideas how to get MTP working _again_... I am simply not getting the dialog again on my android, asking me wether I want just charging, or MTP or Picture mode... **Until most recently, it was easy: Use a USB cable, concect it to my Ubuntu 16.04 Laptop, get the mentioned choice/approval box...** and voilà the Tablet appeared as an MTP device in the Ubuntu ‚file explorer‘ (caja) nicely auto-mounted. * got an Samsung Galaxy S2 tablet * running Android 6.01 * it worked until recently in this configuration I already followed some advice: * I made the developer options visible (by tapping the about device info thrice) * enabled USB debugging (which some sources say, is something to watch out for) * dialed on the phone menu *#0808# → which shows I'am on (o)AP and on MTP + ADB mode just like I should (this radio box btw only holds its state, if USB debugging is enabled) also... * tried different USB ports * tried different cables * tried with another device (MacBook. Thus I have no reason to believe, I messed something up on the host machine OS side... Ubuntu is very stable anyway) * External Store (4kb) under Settings→Applications→“Show System Apps” is on well, one last clue: * Settings → Tethering has the USB switch grayed out „USB cable not connected“. Althoug it clearly is. And I can recharge my tablet through it (otherwise I would have certainly noted...) Device is not rooted. No other glitches. Are there maybe some log files (now that Dev mode is enabled) to check out what might got wrong? Not looked/understood ADB yet. So I couldn't tell you, if that works. Anyway, no dialog to choose upon connecting. I am out of ammo :-( **Thank you for any piece of advice...**

Whenever I'm connecting my Samsung Galaxy A40 running Android 9.0 to a laptop or PC, I'm getting an annoying prompt to allow data transfer, and the following setting which I had set to "Charging phone only" gets reset to "Transferring files": enter image description here However, I only want to charge the phone and absolutely never allow data transfer for security reasons as I frequently have to connect my phone to public or workplace PCs for charging. The service which throws the notification/prompt is called *Android System* and the icon looks a bit like this (only with filled font): Android System I activated developer options and explicitly configured the USB connection settings to **not** allow data transfer. Why does *Android System* keep changing my settings and prompting for data transfer? Is this normal behaviour? Is there a way to regain control without having to root the device?

Revoking data access authorization to a specific computer on Samsung devices

I connected a Samsung smartphone to a Windows computer through a USB cable and had the usual pop-up: > **Allow access to phone data?** > > The connected device will be able to access data on this phone. > > DENY ALLOW I checked "ALLOW," but I'd like to revoke this authorization, and I cannot. When I plug and unplug the computer, the phone is immediately visible and I can access its data from the computer. I tried to uninstall the mobile from the *device manager* (and rebooted the computer, just to be sure...). I shut down the mobile and restarted it. But as soon as I plug it again, it is accessible from the computer and reappears in the *device manager*. Strangely enough, while the phone is entirely removed from the *device manager*, it is still listed in the *autoexecution* section of the *control panel*. When connected, I could also access *USB parameters* on the phone, that are not accessible otherwise. I can shut the access by choosing "charge only," but it's not permanent (when unplugging and plugging again, it goes back to file transfer mode). Looking on the internet and on this forum, I only found the opposite question (people who checked "DENY" and would like to "ALLOW" now; but that's not an issue for me as, in this case, unplugging and plugging again makes the popup appear again). The closest related solution I found was to revoke USB debugging authorization in developer mode, but it seems strange and unrelated to a mere access to the mobile folder. I didn't dare test this option.

When I connect my Google Pixel 6 to my Windows 11 laptop via a USB cable, it only charges by default and does not allow me to transfer files without first enabling file transfers on the handheld, in USB preferences. Unfortunately, every time I undock my laptop then redock, I need to reconfigure that setting, which constantly resets to "No data transfer". I am not alone in this situation, as this forum post (and another question ) shows, but this happens on a fully up-to-date Android 15 (and takes more than 5 s each time). Is there no way to remember the value of "Use USB for" with my laptop? Note that I am not an Android developer and store potentially confidential data on the handheld, so granting an unsafe allow all as *Developer options* lets me configure (regardless of which computer is plugged) is not an option.

Followup on https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/185326/how-has-usb-file-transfer-changed-in-android-changed-over-the-years I've learned that Android 4.3 and later versions don't have this feature because Micro$oft. Newer options, Media device (MTP) or Camera (PTP) mode, are horrendous. It also causes other issues for (Windows) programs that relied on android having USB Mass Storage Mode. ---------- Off hand reasons why MTP is awful. 1. Can't copy more than one thing at a time. (Device is busy warning) 2. Warnings that I need to convert files before copying every single time. 3. Just seems to be a lot slower at copying files. 4. Can't edit files on the phone from Windows. ---------- So, how can you enable USB Mass Storage Mode on newer versions of Android? Let's say I'm rooted and can install a custom iso if that makes a difference. *I've tried searching google, the app store, and xda forums for solutions.*

I am trying to use Vysor to control my Moto G5 which has a broken screen (completely black). It appears to be working otherwise (rings when called etc). However, I cannot connect to my PC using USB cable when the phone is on, because I cannot change from "Charging only" to MTP or PTP because I cannot see it on the screen. I can connect to ADB via recovery (stock and un-rooted) but all "adb shell" commands fail (error:closed) which I assume is due to not being rooted. I am trying to change the default USB connection mode to PTP rather than "Charging only" so I can use Vysor when the phone is booted normally, not in recovery. Has anyone got any ideas? I either need a way to made "adb shell" commands work (to follow the below link), or another way to change the USB default or another bright idea! https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/120026/how-do-i-change-from-ptp-to-mtp-mode-cannot-find-options-in-settings

There are a lot of very old answers to this question, and they are not helping me. * I am running MacOS Venture 13.2.1 * I have a Pixel 4a running Android 13 patched to March 2023 * I have Android File Transfer 1.0.12 which is the latest stable version available * I have never had a Samsung phone so haven't installed Kies. * When connecting the USB cable I get a notification and can select File transfer/Android Auto * The same USB cable is working fine with Windows. The USB port on my Mac is working fine with a hard drive. I am able to connect to the phone using ADB but don't want to use ADB to transfer files all the time when there is a simple GUI that allows this. I am having the same issue on my Windows computer, so I am wondering if there is some setting on my phone I have missed. Update - I am able to access files on my phone via Windows fine after all. I see MTP showing up in Devices, and can see my Phone by it's name in File Explorer. Update 2: I apologise for not giving more detail about what does happen. When I connect my Pixel 4a to my Mac Android File Transfer does not open automatically. When I run it manually, I get a message saying 'No Android device found. The phone detects the connection (hence the USB mode notification, but it seems the Mac does not.

I'm going to put a tablet in my car to accommodate my many desired functions. Of these functions is a backup camera. I plan on using a Logitech webcam that I had around for the camera. The webcam uses USB, so I was going to get an OTG Y adapter so that I could charge the tablet and get data from the camera to the tablet at the same time. This would require a Kernel Update, but that's already lined up. I plan on wiring the power for the webcam into the reverse light wire (either using a relay or a DC-DC converter), and then wiring the data cables to the front of the car to the tablet. This way, the camera would turn on only when the car was in reverse, and then I would have Tasker launch a video viewing app once it detected that the USB had been plugged in, which would be initiated by the webcam receiving power and sending data. This is based off of the assumption that Android recognizes a USB device being "plugged in" as the transfer of data being initiated, **or** power transfer being initiated. What I want to know is, which one is it? **Is USB detected by whether or not power can flow from the host to the client, or whether or not the tablet is receiving data?** Because the tablet would only be doing the latter, and power of the webcam would be completely separate of the tablet. I suppose I could test this, but I wanted to check here first before I murdered several USB cables in the process.

My previous Lenovo tablet with Android 7 had no problem with this procedure: 1. I connect it via a USB cable to a PC with Windows 7. 2. I select the device (tablet) in the Windows Explorer. 3. I open the (virtual) folder **“Internal shared storage”** (or the other, “SD Card”, as I had the SD card inserted in it, too). Then I sow directories and files on the tablet, and I was able to copy them from tablet to PC and vice versa, rename them, delete them, and so on. In my new tablet Lenovo with Android 11 and the same PC with Windows 7, I am able to perform only first 2 steps – then I see only an empty window, no folders in it (i.e., no “Internal shared storage” or other directory / file in it). When I try to copy a file to that empty folder, I obtain the message as > It is not possible to copy the item. > The device stopped to respond, or is disconnected. Is it something bad with settings? Is it possible to fix it? *Note:* I may go around and copy files from the tablet to the USB stick and then from the USB stick to the PC, but this is so annoying and slow… (The USB stick is connected with a short converting cable to the same USB port on the tablet as the USB cable connecting the tablet and PC in the previous step 1.)

I am running KitKat on a tablet with two users: primary (owner) and secondary. I need to access a file generated by an app of the secondary user. When I plug the tablet into my (Ubuntu) desktop via USB, it mounts as a media device (MTP), and shows me the base folder for the currently active user. But the file I want is elsewhere on the system, so I connected from the command line via adb shell instead. Connecting via ADB gives me access to deeper folders (/mnt /proc etc) but I couldn't find the file where I expected it , so I looked in /sdcard anyway. To my surprise I recognised the contents as the base folder of the owner account, even though the currently active user is the secondary user. This also tells me that, if I ever need to, I won't be able to access the base folder for the secondary user via adb shell. How can I access the tablet from adb shell as the secondary user, rather than the primary (owner) user? (Being able to access the secondary user's files is good enough.) I'm not sure what the proper term here is. I mean the folder with Android, Download and Pictures, specific to a particular user. FWIW I am exporting an OPML file from Flym. Flym reports that the OPML export is generated at /storage/emulated/10/Flym_123456789.opml but I can only get as far as /storage/emulated - there is no subfolder called 10, only legacy which is the same as /sdcard (the primary/owner's base folder, not the secondary user's base folder).

Im using a Samsung tabs5e rooted as the media center in my car. I've connected it as follows: TabS5e - USB Hub USB Hub - DAC/Amp (via USB) Dac/Amp - Car via aux Now, my issue is that when I initially boot the tab, I need to either cut power and restart the hub that way, or plug out the tab and plug it back in, both of which fixes the issue that audio isn't routed through the usb connection. The usb hub is powered via the car, so when reconnecting the tablet, it's power supply is still on. This makes me conclude that the tab is the issue. I've tried using set prop commands via shell that I've found on here, but couldn't find one that suits my device. I've tried binding/unbinding the driver and setting every possible USB default setting. No joy. Any idea on how I can accomplish this? A reset of the USB port would be optimal, or cycling it off to on so it detects the hub.

I have a Motorola Edge 20 Pro. Till about 8-9 months ago, I could connect an unpowered (Without a separate power adaptor) USB C Hub to the USB port, and connect a HDMI cable to the hub. This would allow me to use the phone as a media hub and project on the screen connected to the HDMI cable. I believe this was part of the "Ready for" feature I have recently tried using this feature again, and it refuses to work. When I connect an unpowered USB hub to the phone, the "USB controlled by" settings go to read only mode as "Connected device" and I'm unable to use the hub in any manner. Connecting to a powered USB hub just charges the phone. Trying to change the USB preferences to "This device" fails with an error message. I have tried the following as of now: 1. Tried cleaning out the port 2. Tried with 2 different adapters 3. Tried with my work profile disabled 4. Tried safe mode Looking for any other options to debug this issue and get HDMI out over USB C working

I turned on usb-debugging on my HTC One X just to see if I could identify it when using Android SDK. Now the usb-debugging mode always shows up when I connect the phone to my Windows and Linux computer. I have Android 4.1.1 on it; it's not rooted. The settings in developer options is off for everything. Developer options itself is also set to off. Despite this, I always get a notification on my phone that it has connected in usb-debugging mode when I connect with usb-cable. When I check the developer options, they are mysteriously set to on again. When I try to change the settings for the usb connection, I get the settings for Portable hotspot & tethering and not the settings to charge or use mass storage. Strange! This behavior prevents me from using the mass storage option. On my Linux computer, I cannot see any files on the device. Are there any global configurations/settings I can clear to fix this? What else should/could I do?
