How to transfer video from a smartphone (with microUSB port) to an external portable mini-DISPLAY (AV, HDMI, VGA inputs)?
I'm looking for the best way to transfer the video from a smartphone to an external monitor (used in cars, garages) to get a bigger picture. 1. I find this useful for dash cameras, and for entertainment with bigger display. May I accomplish this with a OTG cable? Your help is welcome.

I have planned for some time to use a smartphone or tablet to give scientific presentations via projector, instead of using a laptop. I'm now thinking about buying a new Android smartphone, if I can be sure that in the end I'll be able to realize this goal with it. So my main question is: **What do I have to look out for in order to get a device with which I can give projector presentations?** I apologize that this question is not exactly about a concrete problem I'm faced with right now – I just don't want to purchase a costly device only to find out later that I can't do with it what I want. I therefore did some thinking and research about the *possible* problems, and ask you for advice on how to avoid a concrete problem to occur in the first place. Here are some issues that occurred to me: 1. In my experience most projector installations in lecture halls still only provide access to a **VGA** connector. I know that VGA as an analog signal requires D-A conversion from a digital signal, but I'm confused about how much effort this takes: [Some](http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B004B65KXQ/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_9?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2SPS3CI7RTX03) converters have the shape of a box which needs an extra power supply, [others](http://www.amazon.de/Adapter-Audio-%C3%9Cbertragung-Konverterkabel-Unterst%C3%BCtzung-digital/dp/B00DP1OOSK/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AEB9F56C3A3O6) are very small and don't need extra power. **What is the difference between these different types of devices, and which kind do I need?** Please note that the links are only meant as examples, I'm not asking specifically about these products. 2. Again in my experience, most installed projectors do not yet support Full HD, but still need signals at resolutions like 800x600 or 1024x768. At least [some](http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0085B5KPQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2XW1R8G26C2W1) HDMI-to-VGA converters appear to support **downscaling** from Full HD to VGA resolutions. Since I probably can't control this from the smartphone/tablet: How does it work? Can I trust that the optimal resolution is automatically negotiated between the adapter and the projector? Can I expect a decent-looking result from the downscaling, or will it be all washed out? Practically speaking: **Is there a specifically named feature of such converters that I should look out for when choosing one?** Again, the link is only for reference. 3. Android apps normally have screen output optimized for the fixed, physically small screen built into the device and not the flexibility that is provided by changing the screen resolution or resizing a window on a Desktop OS. Is it a realistic goal to achieve a **good presentation experience** from a mobile device similar to the one from a laptop? E.g. it appears not to be possible to get Adobe Reader for Android into a proper one-page-fullscreen mode. **Is there presentation software that does this better?** I'm mainly thinking of presentations in pdf format. And maybe there are caveats I'm not even thinking of?

I have recently bought the Nvidia Shield Tablet, which happens to have Mini HDMI output. As a PhD student in Maths (potentially staying in academia afterwards), I give and will most likely continue to give presentations on a regular basis and was wondering whether it would be possible to do away with bringing my heavy laptop to conferences and just completely rely on my tablet instead. It seems like the answer is positive, as there are Android versions of pretty much all the computing software I use and a Bluetooth keyboard should allow for a rather smooth 'working experience'. One final issue that stands out is presentations and in particular the comfort of having a pointer to work with. The way cheap wireless pointers work these days is that you simply plug in a small usb stick to your laptop and immediately it starts to work. Can something similar be achieved with Android? Quickness is key here, I really want to be able to just plug things in and be good to go. I can see two possibilities: 1) Use the so-called USB On-The-Go adapter (micro USB to normal USB) and then plug in the usb stick provided. Any chance of this simple approach being a solution? 2) Buy a more sophisticated pointer which has Bluetooth support and use it to connect it to your device. I guess once it is connected it should work immediately? King apologies if this question is a duplicate (I sincerely think it isn't, I have done a fair bit of digging) or whether the answer is simply 'both (1) and (2) will work', but I just wanted to be sure before I order relevant accessories.

How to properly play 720p/1080p media with subtitles through MHL (HDMI out)?

I own a Galaxy Note and got a MHL cable for watching movies on my Sony Bravia. I'm having some problems for playing it nicelly. **With hardware decoding:** Only the stock samsung "Video Player" is able to play at TV resolution with the subtitles. The problem is that it seems to have an annoying bug that makes the subtitles stuck. After someone ends talking, the last sub don't vanish/disappear, it keeps there on the screen until the next speech. It's discussed at an old xda thread but no one was able to provide solution at that time . **With Software decoding:** I can get the subs with a third party player (like MX Player), but it doesn't stream the video to the TV directly, like the stock video player does. What I get is a rescaled screen, like when not playing a video, just browsing Android, and as such, not only it's not playing 720p/1080p video, but also, I get black areas because the phone aspect ratio doesn't match the TV aspect ratio. **Is there a solution for this?** As can be seen in the mentioned thread, there was a "stuck subtitle" problem with another Samsung device. Is this a bug with all Samsung devices? Is there an alternative player that can play videos with hardware decoding and also display subtitles? So it can take all my TV screen. I've checked this thread too, but there was general misleaded advices...

I am trying to get the video out on the Galaxy Nexus to do something other than mirroring. In a perfect world I want to do something similiar to the iPhone's AirPlay, but instead of streaming the video to an AppleTV it just pushes the video to the video out accessed by the MHL cable. I would be alright with mirroring if I could lock the phone and it would still play video through the video-out, but to my knowledge that hasn't been accomplished pointing to this post and this post over at XDA Developers. I know Android has the capabilities because of Motorola's webtop software but I'm wondering if there is a hardware issue involved too because if it's solely hardware there no reason why there couldn't be a viable solution to my problem. Any ideas?

I'm starting to regret not getting an Atrix - the whole docking scheme seems so cool. Unfortunately, it seems that I can't even do much of a DIY thing to output a video stream with the device's screen over USB. I have a rooted G2. The G1 could do video-out, but only because it had the hardware for it (although it was never implemented). There's apps out there for VNC and for screenshots, although not for screen recording (from which it would be a small step to output to USB). The most frustrating thing is that this is an area with very sparse documentation. Stuff like this hasn't much been done before, and I can't find any existing software to do this sort of thing. Is there anything that you guys know of that I could follow for developing an app to do this via software since the hardware for video-out isn't there? Even better yet, is there any software that can record the screen? If I was on a Linux desktop, how could I tap into the monitor's video stream? Thanks, -Trey

Can non-HD Android devices output full HD over HDMI?
What is the chance Android 4+ phone or tablet with physical HDMI-out connector will be able to output FullHD resolution if the device itself does not have FullHD screen? Are there any rules for this? What if the device's screen resolution is even smaller than 720p (like 800x480)?

I have a laptop screen with vga input laying around that I was hoping to turn into a small netbook for school with my phone as a processor. However, I have the droid razr m and I can't find (online) any way to output video so I can use the laptop screen. So my question is: How do I output the phone screen to VGA/HDMI as cheaply as possible?

I'm having some issues getting a video signal from my Droibox Ace . Just doing straight HDMI-to-HDMI at 1080p to my LG TV seems to work fine, but I have a Dell WFP2407 Monitor connected to the Droibox using a HDMI-DVI cable. The monitor only supports 1920x1200 resolution and I can't get the video to show up using any configuration. I have tried various apps from the store to try and output the required resolution with no luck. I've also tried moving through all of the options available on the "Display output mode" screen, although it's hard to tell if these options had been applied as I was trying to switch between composite & HDMI output in order to see what I was doing. Display output mode Does anyone have any ideas on how I can change the HDMI output resolution to one of the supported? Or is there some other issue at work here?

I just got a Galaxy Nexus and love it. My current debacle is trying to figure out how to hook up my phone the display in my car which only has analog inputs (composite.) That worked perfectly with my old Droid Incredible as it did video out with composite through the microusb port. So i've been looking around for a solution and have found two viable options: 1. Get a digital to analog converter box which is around $50 off amazon and I already have the TV out cable for the Galaxy Nexus which works fine. 2. Find a product like apple TV for android where I can push the video to screen through an independent device but I'm not about to install a wireless router in the car. Right now I feel the only real option seems the converter box but that seems far to cumbersome of a solution for what I'm trying to do. Anyone have a better idea or cheaper idea?
