What is the difference between "USB-C to HDMI Adapter" and "MHL"?

Another 50% of online articles say S8 supports MHL.
It obviously supports **USB-C to HDMI Adapter** which is only one side with Type-C port and another side with HDMI port cable.
If S8 does NOT support **MHL**, what is the difference between "USB-C to HDMI Adapter" and "MHL"?
Does "USB-C to HDMI Adapter" have worse video output than "MHL"?
Thanks a lot.

I have a USB C to HDMI adaptor that works with my M1 MacBook Air that I expected would work with the A30 too but it did not.
Most info about Samsung's HDMI / MHL support I can find is about how Samsung's older micro USB version was nonstandard, having a different number of pins. But there's a lot less info about the newer ones that have USB C.
I can find sites trying to sell aftermarket cables and adaptors for this phone but I don't trust them. So far none of the pages on the A30's specs I can find specifically state that HDMI or MHL is either supported or not supported, it's just not in the list.

I already have a [multi-use adapter with MHL + SD + USB](http://amzn.com/B00KW4MKMU) . Unfortunately, connecting micro-USB power to the multi-use adapter does not charge the tablet.
I would like to know if I can charge the device at the same time as using the HDMI connection.
Anyone know if this works?

I picked up an HML-to-HDMI adapter , and an adapter to get it working on my Galaxy S4 . When I first plug it into a TV, everything is great! I can get a picture and sound on my TV in the expected resolutions.
After a few minutes, TV reports "no signal". If I unplug the cable from either the TV end or the phone end, the phone reports the HDMI cable disconnected. Plugging it back in on both ends, the phone reports that the HDMI cable is connected. However, I still don't see anything on the TV.
Rebooting the phone (via holding the power button and choosing restart) does not resolve the issue. If I plug the phone into a power source or USB port, and then switch back to the MHL adapter, it starts to work again.
This problem has occurred with multiple TVs.
I have a couple theories:
- Some sort of power management shuts off the video output after a few minutes. (Note that I can be playing video and the phone screen stays on while TV reports no signal.)
- An error condition with the interface that requires it to reset.
Any thoughts on how to fix this? Am I the only one with this problem? If so, I suppose I could have a funky adapter.

I am wondering why when I start Netflix's app it fails to playback any video (even downloaded ones).
Youtube works just fine, it's only an app running on Desktop looking environment.
So is it the DRM that could forbid that without an app knowing, I am not trying to ask an app specific thing, but globally for any app if DRM framework is the cause. Like for instance when a banking app blurs out, it's not the app causing it, but the category of the app.
The full setup looks like this:
- 1 Samsung S10
- A smart tv (MHL compatible)
- 1 cheap usb-C to HDMI adapter
- A long HDMI cable
(which doesn't matter at this point, since we have a connection to the tv)
- A Samsung Dex running
- Target app is in maximized window
(Please don't flag the question if it's poorly written, I really think this is a problem that some people will find it useful if solved, especially if they want to watch videos using some evil DRM based apps)

I have a pico projector, which I use to display HDMI from my Galaxy S3 via an MHL cable. I recently learned that my phone (and most newer Android devices) can be controlled with USB gamepads, mouses, keyboards, etc. with a USB OTG connector, and I have MegaN64 (a very good Nintendo 64 emulator) on my phone, which works great with my USB gamepad.
I'm trying to combine these two features: I want to be able to provide HDMI input to my projector from my phone, and have a USB gamepad controlling it at the same time. Is there any way to do this? I can't with my current equipment, because MHL takes up the micro USB port, so I can't have anything plugged in at the same time. Even if I had a simple micro USB splitter, as far as I know the micro USB port will not work as a USB port and an MHL port at the same time (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong).
I know there are wireless HDMI receivers available, like Chromecast, but all of them that I've seen use Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth, and most only work with certain apps, instead of just mirroring the screen. I plan on using this setup while camping, so sending HDMI over Wi-Fi won't be an option for me.
The only close-to-a-solution I've come up with so far is to connect a controller over Bluetooth: there are a good few apps that will connect a phone to a Wii Remote, but that's not the best controller for some of the games I want to play. I've looked into connecting my preferred (USB) controller over Bluetooth, but I haven't been able find a way to do that.
Is there any alternative to MHL for outputting HDMI which doesn't require Wi-Fi, or a way to connect a USB device over Bluetooth?

I've done (quite) some googling, but I still don't get it. You need an MHL converter, or adapter, or something. On one end of the adapter, all resources say, there is a "standard micro-USB" port, and on the other a "standard HDMI port". If they are all so standard, what's the fuzz about 5-pins vs. 11-pins? The HDMI port must be standard for all displays to work with it I guess, so it must be something on the (apparently not so standard) micro-USB side in the phone. Looking in my phone, I can only see a 4-pins female micro-USB connector. Or are these 11 pins (I have a Galaxy Note II) buried somewhere deeper inside?
Secondly, there is often talk about this "switch" that's thrown as soon as an MHL adapter is connected. USB-OTG is disabled and it becomes a display input/output port only (input for the remote control, if available). I guess that means it's not possible to connect it through a USB hub to the phone? I need a bluetooth mouse and keyboard instead of a USB mouse and keyboard if I want to do this? Or is this only applicable for the 5-pins MHL devices, and is the point of the 11-pins one that I can connect my USB hub to the micro-USB port on the adapter?
Thirdly, I've also seen USB 2.0 to HDMI converters. They're twice as expensive as MHL, but they have a normal USB connection and output HDMI, so that would fit directly in my USB hub. (MHL would also fit through a microUSB->USB converter, but it seems there is something special about the micro-USB end that I don't get.) The question is whether my phone (a Galaxy Note II) has drivers for that kind of hardware, and whether the hub is fast enough. Any ideas?
Lastly, if anyone knows this, I'm curious about how this works on the inside. The graphics chip of the phone sends the video-out to its micro-USB port, just like it would with HDMI, or does it have some custom protocol that the MHL adapter then converts to HDMI? What about HDCP, how can you prevent someone from reading the output stream if every TV in the world can decrypt it already? Or is it like SSL a way to setup a secure connection to the TV so that others can't read your data stream if they were to capture it?

That would leave the USB port for this. But I still don't know how to achieve it.

I own a Galaxy Note and got a MHL cable for watching movies on my Sony Bravia.
I'm having some problems for playing it nicelly.
**With hardware decoding:**
Only the stock samsung "Video Player" is able to play at TV resolution with the subtitles. The problem is that it seems to have an annoying bug that makes the subtitles stuck. After someone ends talking, the last sub don't vanish/disappear, it keeps there on the screen until the next speech. It's discussed at an old xda thread but no one was able to provide solution at that time .
**With Software decoding:**
I can get the subs with a third party player (like MX Player), but it doesn't stream the video to the TV directly, like the stock video player does. What I get is a rescaled screen, like when not playing a video, just browsing Android, and as such, not only it's not playing 720p/1080p video, but also, I get black areas because the phone aspect ratio doesn't match the TV aspect ratio.
**Is there a solution for this?**
As can be seen in the mentioned thread, there was a "stuck subtitle" problem with another Samsung device. Is this a bug with all Samsung devices?
Is there an alternative player that can play videos with hardware decoding and also display subtitles? So it can take all my TV screen.
I've checked this thread too, but there was general misleaded advices...

How do I force my MHL to DVI adapter to send 1080p video to my HD computer monitor?

I bought this adapter: www.delock.de/produkte/F_697_MHL_65337/merkmale.html in the hope that it would send native 1080p video from my HTC One (M7) running CyanogenMod 12.1 to my Benq GW2265, which is a full HD monitor. But it won't. Somehow the adapter or the phone seem to get the impression that the monitor only supports 640x480@60Hz, so that's all I'm getting. I've also tried it with two different models of HP Compaq HD monitors - same result.
Now if I plug the same phone and the same adapter + a DVI-to-HDMI adapter into an HD TV, I get 1080p@25Hz output, so I know the phone and the MHL adapter can both reach that resolution just fine. It's just that these computer monitors for some reason aren't being seen as devices capable of displaying resolutions that high.
From what I've read online, one possibility would've been that the monitors were not reporting superior MHL-compatible resolutions like 720p@60 or 1080p@25/30 as being supported via their EDID blocks. But as it turns out, my Benq really is reporting 720p@60 as an available standard resolution in its EDID block (though not 1080p@25 or 30 Hz because computer monitor refresh rates don't go that low). So I still don't understand why the phone won't send 720p@60 to the monitor rather than 640x480@60.
Per some instructions found online, I've tried reflashing my monitor's EDID - figured maybe if I moved the 720p@60 value up the list so it gets reported as the first standard mode it might register at the MHL end. No dice, though: the monitor's EDID ROM is write-protected and I don't know how to disable the protection.
Then I found out the Android files/devices having to do with MHL output were sitting in /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb1/ and that some people had gotten results by sticking a value of 4 (corresponding to the 720p mode) in the video_mode file after connecting the adapter and monitor. Again no dice - the file seems to get immediately reverted to containing a "2" and there is no change in the image I'm seeing on the monitor.
I'm almost giving up here. Can this even be done? Would there be any use in getting an additional DVI-to-VGA converter to try to go through the monitor's other input? Or is there something else I can try?
