I had an Android (Samsung Galaxy) smartphone with AT&T providing the carrier service. Because AT&T owns DIRECTV, they allow unlimited streaming on their DIRECTV app using AT&T's cellular network data that does not affect your normal internet or hotspot data limits like it would for, say, Netflix. That allowed me to stream DIRECTV with no data limits or surcharges to my phone over the cellular network while traveling in my RV. I would then use the "Smart View" (Miracast) feature on the phone with my Amazon Firestick/TV to connect the two devices over a direct-WiFi connection (the Firestick has a wireless transmitter/receiver built in to facilitate this connection). The direct-WiFi connection ability that "Smart View" used was important because the connection used this feature instead of demanding a WiFi connection to the internet over AT&T's network, eating up my data limit, negating the advantage of the unlimited streaming if I was required to access the internet using AT&T's cellular network or hotspot capability. I recently upgraded to a new Galaxy A14 5G phone running Android 13 to get the benefits of 5G. Samsung/Galaxy, in their infinite wisdom, deleted the "Smart View" functionality, "replacing" it with "SmartThings", which not only requires a WiFi connection to the internet or a special SmartThings hub/router to function, and in addition, it does not support Amazon Firestick or many other devices "Smart View" used to support. Any help or constructive guidance on how to get "Smart View" or a similar app that only required a direct-WiFi to implement the screen mirroring capability would be appreciated. I have been hunting for such an app for weeks now.

I want to automatically backup my Android (at least the media files) to my PC over a WiFi connection when both the Android & PC is connected to the same WiFi home network. It should probably be possible to transfer the files directly P2P without needing to store them on some unknown server somewhere. Preferably, I want it to happen fully automatically when it connects to my home WiFi & I have my PC running, so I don't even have to think about doing backups anymore. I have been searching for the solution, but the closest solution I have found so far is some apps that create a local FTP Server on the phone, where I potentially can manually pull the media files out of the phone from my PC, but I haven't managed to establish a working connection with any of the apps so far. Is it possible to backup Android to PC over P2P WiFi connection automatically? Edit_1: Android 8.0.0 (not rooted) Windows 7

How to Run Captive Portal Server on Android Device using Hotspot SoftAp and DHCP options
**Goal:** I want to run a web server that provides a Captive portal service on an Android Device, using the native Android [Soft AP/Hotspot](https://source.android.com/devices/tech/connect/wifi-softap-tethering), Termux, NodeJs, and the "new" way to detect captive portals using a DHCP option: [Capti...
**Goal:** I want to run a web server that provides a Captive portal service on an Android Device, using the native Android [Soft AP/Hotspot](https://source.android.com/devices/tech/connect/wifi-softap-tethering) , Termux, NodeJs, and the "new" way to detect captive portals using a DHCP option: [Captive-Portal Identification in DHCP and Router Advertisements (RAs)](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc8910) ,. **Approach:** I want to add an option on the DHCP handshake of my Android Device Soft AP as specified in the [RFC](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc8910) , [Apple](https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=q78sq5rv) and [Android](https://developer.android.com/about/versions/11/features/captive-portal) official forums. (the old way to create a captive portal was to intercept and controll all DNS or HTTP requests of each device conected to the AccessPoint, but in order to do it I need to ROOT my Device and install a DNS server or change the IP tables, and I dont want to do it becouse is very similar of what I already did that on a RaspberryPi) **Current State:** Im able to run a local Http Server running Nodejs in Termux app on an NOT ROOTED Android device,I want to know if it is posible to ADD THAT SIMPLE DHCP OPTION to the Android DHCP native handshake, maybe creating an APP and using the [wifi-softap-tethering](https://source.android.com/devices/tech/connect/wifi-softap-tethering) utilities or changing some kind of DHCP config file in some location like /etc/dhcp/dhcp.conf to add the option. If adding a DHCP option is not posible Im gonna change the IP tables or run a DNS server and intercept the trafic to provide the Captive Portal Detection as the OLD fashion way. **Previous Attempts:** I was able to create a captive portal using DNSMASQ and HOSTAPD on a RaspberryPi, I suppose that I can do the same on MY Android device, but I want to USe the "modern Way" using DHCP captive portal options. **Unknowns** 1. Where is the configuration of the local Android DHCP?, is it hardcoded in the source code or it exists in a /system/{some-dhcp-func}/dhcp.conf file? 2. Is it posible to add a DHCP option to the native Android Soft AP functionality? 3. Can I use or extend some offical Class of Android apk and create my app to add the DHCP Option in the Handshake? 4. Do I really need to root my device, install a DNS server and intercept all the DNS /HTTP trafic to provide the captive portal functionality?

I need 1st smartphone to control applications running on 2nd smartphone in interactive mode, exactly as I can control applications run on Android board connected to PC via USB cable. Ok, OTG and host mode supported since modern smartphones intended to work in parallel. I have to download some files on a daily basis (3~7 files having 500MB~2000MB file size) for my office project and need these files in the home as well. Scenario I do not want to re-download these files in the home, so I use the following procedure: 1) Download file in Office Laptop 2) Copy in (Android) mobile (via SHAREit App) 3) Paste in the home Laptop (via SHAREit App) 4) Delete from Mobile 5) Delete from Office Laptop **Is it possible to do all these steps automatically?** This means, at the end of the day (before leaving my office) I just run a script that copy (latest) files on my mobile and delete these files from the office PC; when I reached home (from mobile) I run another script, which copies these (latest) files in my home PC and delete from mobile.

I'd like to be able to easily transfer large files wirelessly, fast, between Android devices - preferably without requiring root. As a secondary objetive, it wouldn't hurt if the same solution could be used, to transfer files between the Android devices and a Windows PC. Specifically, I'm trying to exchange files between my Nexus 7 (Android 4.2.2) and Samsung Galaxy S2 (Android 4.0.4). - Bluetooth is simply too slow, so that's out of the question - Transfer via the Internet is also not an option, hence so is cloud-based solutions - Only Nexus 7 supports NFC, so that's out too - [Fast File Transfer](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floriandraschbacher.fastfiletransfer) looked promising and very simple, but does not work on "Devices that don't have WiFi Tethering setting, *such as the Nexus 7*" Wi-Fi direct ([supported from Android 4.0](http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/connectivity/wifip2p.html) and up) seems to be a decent lowest common denominator between my two devices, however... Galaxys S2's native **Send via Wi-Fi Direct** sees the Nexus, but seems to get stuck in the "Connecting..." most times. When there finally seems to be breakthrough, I get "Waiting..." and a spinning circle. Even if it worked, it would only allow me to send from the Galaxy S2 to the Nexus 7, as a similar option os not present on the Nexus 7. J4velin's **[WiFi Direct](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.wifidirect)** is no longer available in the Play Store, with the following explanation: > WiFi Direct drivers are broken on many devices, which led to users leaving negative reviews for this app. As I don't see any sense in keeping a free app published when only getting 1-star-ratings (for an issue which only your device manufacturer can fix), the app is no longer available at the Play Store. Nick Adams' **[WiFi Direct File Transfer](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.nickadams.wifi.direct.file.transfer)** seems flaky at best. Invations from Nexus 7 to Galaxy S2 are never received. Invitations from Galaxy S2 are mostly received, but even when accepting promptly, the peers doesn't always show as connected. When they finally do, usually after quite a long wait, I can select a file to send but it's never transferred - "Transfer failed" it says almost immediately in the notification bar. budius inc's **[WiFi Shoot](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.budius.WiFiShoot)** is working slightly better, but still very unreliable. I actually managed to (occasionally) send files both ways, but never when attempting connection from the Nexus 7. To send from the Nexus 7 to the Galaxy S2, I had to go through this akward manoeuvre: 1. Share the file on the Nexus 7 via the *WiFi Shoot* intent 2. Start the *Receive WiFi Shoot* app on the Galaxy S2 3. Invite the Nexus 7 from the Galaxy S2 (never the other way around!) 4. Accept the invitation on the Nexus 7 5. Press the *Shoot* button on the Galaxy S2 Take the whole switching back and forth between devices, and garnish with random delays or failures in any step of the process... Is there really no easy, reliable, fast way to transfer files directly between different Android devices? Generally, my experience with Wi-Fi Direct is all but positive... - A device often won't even see a device lying next to it - Sometimes, it will see the other device, only to have it disappear from the list, before I have the chance to connect - When I do have a chance, invations are not realiably received (from Galaxy S2 to Nexus 7 mostly reliable, but never worked the other way around) - When invitations are received (and accepted), a partnership rarely manages to be setup ("invited" or "connecting") - And even when that happens, some apps can't seem to transfer files through it... ****Sigh**** Maybe J4velin's explanation pretty much sums up the sad state of Wi-Fi Direct on Android, which otherwise seemed as the best solution to my quest?

Known solutions: * USB Mass Storage (sadly, mostly deprecated on Android 4, 5, etc.). * MTP, and I know its benefits (a lot) and its weaknesses (browsing on a MTP drive with Windows Explorer has poor integration of usual features: try to right click on a file on a MTP drive, you don't have the usual UI things like Open with etc.) * Samba * FTP server solutions (good solution, but 1) how to use this if I'm on the road, with no Wifi router like at home? then I cannot link computer phone? 2) it seems that [such an app](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.medhaapps.wififtpserver.pro) doesn't offer access to external sd card) * AirDroid, etc. But with all these methods, **you don't really have access on your computer to the phone's filesystem like if it was a local folder**. Question: **Is there a solution that makes it possible to browse the phone's filesystem as if it was a computer local folder, easily?**
