What is the expected behavior of the “NR only” option in the *#*#4636#*#* menu?

I have a fully-patched Pixel Fold with the latest version of Android. If I boot into airplane mode with no SIM cards installed while the “NR only” option is enabled, as soon as I disable airplane mode, the phone immediately connects to a GSM (2G) network, opening my phone up to 2G attacks despite having no SIM card. My expectation is that these connections would be blocked. I also see that the phone occasionally makes UMTS and WCDMA (both 3G) connections in this mode as well, even though 3G is supposedly defunct in the United States. My expectation is that these connections would also be blocked. If I then enable a network (i.e., Cricket or Visible) that seems to only support 5G in the form of 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) (4G+) (again, with “NR only” enabled), the phone proceeds to connect me to LTE, sometimes simultaneously with an NR network (with null MCC/MNC values and a TAC value of 0). My expectation would be for the phone to report no service. So not only is “NR only” not NR only (it allows 2G, 3G, and 4G), but if I enable airplane mode, both \*#\*#4636#\*#\* and the CellMapper app continue to report that my phone is always connected to various cells over 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G, the latter two with a SIM cards installed and the former two without SIM cards installed. Is “NR only” just “prefer 5G, otherwise connect to anything”? Does “NR only” include 5G NSA, which necessitates allowing LTE (making the option identical to “NR/LTE”)? Shouldn’t airplane mode entirely disable the mobile radio? It seems if “NR only” is not literally “NR only”, then there’s no defense against the attacks described at https://www.mdpi.com/2624-800X/4/1/2 (which leverage 2G, 4G, and 4G+ (AKA 5G NSA)).

Maintaining airplane mode after alarm powers on phone and rings on lock screen (in airplane mode)

I am running Android 12 on a Realme 8 5G phone. This phone comes with the following clock application, which is separate from the Google clock application that can be downloaded from the Google Play store, which is similar, but seems to lack this feature. I am not sure about other clock applications. The application looks like this when opened: clock application with alarms screen This application has the feature that when you set an alarm for a time when the phone is off, the phone powers on and the alarm rings. As far as I could tell, when the phone boots up and the alarm rings, the lock screen is on. This means, that as a special feature, wifi and data network from the notification drawer are not enabled (until the user logs in). This effectively enforces airplane mode. As such, this feature should be safe as far as phones going off while the phone is on a plane and turned off should go (because when it boots, the equivalent of airplane mode is in effect). I am not an expert, but as far as I know airplane mode just temporarily turns out wifi and data network. If it does turn any other feature, this should be taken care of here. I wonder whether it would be possible to select a "maintain airplane mode after unlock" as a feature on the lock screen. This would mean, that, if, for example, a user is on a plane and the phone is turned off because it was turned off when they went on, and then the phone turns on after flight (for example to remind the user to take a medication or anything), then the user can also unlock the phone to take a note or do anything else while maintaining airplane mode. This would be a feature. Thank you for your answers.

I haven't yet come across a situation where factory reset didn't resolve the issue. This one is very intriguing to me as I could not conclude why the phone could stay in the partial flight mode (faded blue). It may be a coincidence, but it happened sometime after the firmware update. However, it doesn't look like a widespread issue to assume it is a bug. I have attached an image that shows flight mode in faded blue. It stays that way until I switch to Wi-Fi calling or remove the SIM card from the tray. I cannot select networks from the settings - "Error while searching for networks." Here are the steps I have taken so far: 1. Wipe cache partition 2. Clear SIM cache, grant permissions, network rest, restart device 3. Multiple resets with flight mode on and off, finally did a Factory rest 4. Used ODIN flashed with latest stock ROM 5. Used ODIN flashed with a year-old ROM - system performed updates as well 6. Used ADB shell to enable cell in airplane mode, no impact. ADB mode shows flight mode was off. 7. Replaced with new SIM card, no difference Based on the above steps, it looks like this is probably a hardware issue, but I would be relieved if it comes from experts. No drops or physical damages to the phone. I haven't read anywhere that partial flight mode results from hardware failure. However, neither ADB made any difference to conclude it as a software/GUI issue. If there aren't solutions left, I can make peace with my phone. I would appreciate your comments and inputs. enter image description here

I am absolutely 100% new to Tasker. I have bought and installed this app to automate a few things which IFTTT simply can't. Here is the situation: My bedroom is in a basement apartment and so I do not get good cell service reception at all while I'm down there, and since it doubles as my office space (on days I work from home) and my gaming area, I tend to spend a decent amount of my time in my room. This being said, I have an LG V30 ThinQ with Android 8.x Oreo and my current service provider offers a Wi-Fi Calling service. Naturally, I turned it on, and bingo... calls are now crisp and text messages sent without a hitch. Well... that's at home at least. However, at my work, the opposite is true: The Wi-Fi is bad, but the cell service reception is always super strong. Yes, my phone does have a setting to use Wi-Fi calling as a second priority to my cell service (meaning that it will use my cell service before using the Wi-Fi Calling) but instead of switching intelligently based on the strength of the cell service reception strength, it only switches to Wi-Fi Calling once I stop having cell service reception period. Which doesn't work well in the basement, since sometimes I get just enough signal to toggle it back to the bad cell service for calling. **So, I would like to create a task with Tasker that**, once connected to/disconnected from my home network, would allow either the Wi-Fi Calling to be toggled; or for the airplane mode to be toggled. That way, as long as I'm connected to my home network, my phone will be using the Wi-Fi calling capabilities, without having to toggle them on and off again manually. The problem is since I'm new to this, I don't know the first thing about programming a task in this version of Tasker. All tutorials I came across were very little help. Could somebody work me through setting up something along those lines?

Are there any files like init.d that are easy to modify where these kinds of boot options are stored? Another alternative would be a modified Custom Recovery. But I haven't heard of one. *Use case:* *Restore an old Nandroid Backup, but before the system fetches all the updates (messenger...) the user wants to restore certain app data so nothing gets lost.* That is only possible when in flight mode.

I keyed in the usual password the next morning but the login failed. I tried all different passwords and it still doesn't work. To make matters worse and for whatever reasons, the phone went into airplane mode after a few restarts of the phone. I cannot afford a factory reset as it contains all her work and personal stuff. We went to Huawei Service Centre and they are unable to help as well. Any way to force kick the phone out of airplane mode?

I'm in the process of creating a "secure device" to store and process sensitive information. Using an Android device was the best course of action for me, since I can make a quick app, plus I can use the camera, finger print, and other goodies that comes with these. All development is going well, except that I want to have that device as isolated from any network activity as possible. For now I'm just turning off WIFI, making sure Mobile Data is off, and setting airplane mode on. But, and where is my question: Is it possible to do it on a OS level? in such a way that there is no obvious way to turn it back on? I spend more than 2 hours searching around but most results are how-tos, or things unrelated to what I want to do. Just to be clear, I do not want my app to do this, but instead, run a command or do something to the device that "physically" disables connectivity on the device. I would love if this does not require a custom android build. I would accept purchase recommendations for devices that comes without connectivity at all. Thanks!

I know the definition of Airplane mode is all communications and radio signals are blocked. But is it possible to turn off the "calling/receiving" part of the phone so your phone is not connecting to a cell tower and only allow Wifi? I've looked into a couple of apps in Google Play but they're either not working or out of date with newer versions of Android. I know there is strong opinions on both sides of the issue but I'm worried about radiation from my phone since i use it a lot in bed and I hold the phone close to my head and face. At night I'm not worried about receiving calls, so I just want to turn off the phone part and use WiFi. Is there a way? Or am i just crazy and paranoid?

I expect that if I disable the first SIM card, it should consume less power. I don't want to remove the SIM from the phone though, as it's easy to get lost or to forget it when needed. How do I disable (as in "Airplane mode") only one of two SIM cards on Android? If there is no proper way, can it be done by some root trick?

I have Samsung Galaxy S4. I am trying to get the GPS work on offline maps. I am for instance trying this on MAPS.ME app. If I have WiFi or 3G signal, the location works great. However if I turn on the airplane mode, and the location on, the application cannot find my location. I had the issue with Android 4.4 KitKat and recently upgraded to Android 5 Lollipop and the issue is still there. I am pretty sure it is not an issue with the app because I also tried on Google Maps with a preloaded map and it is the same. I have also downloaded GPS apps such as GPS Test and GPS Status and they all manage to connect with satellites and find a location, even offline. I think that proves that it is not a hardware issue. I think I might have unselected a Google option somewhere to block the GPS usage (I am usually very careful not to give Google too much data about me) Any other ideas on fixing this issue?

I am working on an app so need to connect to the device through wireless pairing. I frequently put the device in flight mode and this turns off the wireless option as desired. But when I switch off the flight mode, the wireless debugging option remains disabled. What's more, after manually enabling the wireless debugging, the IP port gets changed so I have to connect via adb connect and give the new IP port address every time. Is there any way to make the device automatically enable the wireless option after the flight mode is deactivated (if it was enabled previously)? Or at least to force the device to use the same port number every time?
