I am using an HTC Evo 4g with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. I'm trying to deal with apps which keep my phone from entering sleep mode, and the YouTube app is a major offender. With downloaded apps, usually the fix is to remove the app and find an alternative app that doesn't suck the battery dry. But I want to keep YouTube enabled so I can watch YouTube videos.
What settings for the YouTube app can I change to get it to not hold a wake lock for hours on end? Are there any device settings that I can change to help?
So far I have disabled "Preload subscriptions", "Preload watch later", "Improve YouTube", and "Notifications" in the YouTube app's settings, but the wake lock still occurs.

How can I decrypt an encrypted SD card (HTC Evo 4G) on a different device?

After a factory reset the SD card shows up as damaged. I've tried mounting it in various ways, but neither the phone nor a computer will attempt to mount the drive - they just ask to format it.
Is there any hope of recovering the contents?

I use my phone to play music at work. When I wander away from my desk, I often leave my headphones plugged in. If someone calls my phone when the headphones are plugged in, the phone rings, but only through the headphones and I end up missing the call. What I would like is to be able to set different audio to play through different outputs: my audio player through my headphones and my ringtone through my speaker. I've looked through the sound settings and haven't found much that seems incredibly useful.
Are there any apps that currently support doing this? Does the android api even support multiple audio output targets?

I just got a HCT EVO and was thinking about getting car stereo with bluetooth, car mount, and car charger to go with it (for my 2005 Civic).
First of all, are there any products that will do all of these? A mount/charger that can also be hooked into the car audio? It doesn't even have to be bluetooth if it can just directly hook my phone into the car speakers, but I haven't been able to find anything like this.
Otherwise, I am having trouble finding a minimal bluetooth device... I don't really need anything features except routing bluetooth to my car audio, because my phone does everything else.
I am also concerned that I've read some reviews that say they only work with the phones **bluetooth calling and not with playing media**. I'd like to be able to listen to pandora in the car. How can I make sure that when I see "bluetooth" I can know it supports both?
Can anyone give me some tips on what to look for or where to look? Are these things hard to install yourself?

I've got an HTC Evo Design 4G (Android 2.3.4), and I can't figure out how to clear localStorage in the browser. Clearing the cache, history, form data and everything else doesn't do it. Resetting the browser to default settings doesn't do it. The website (served from the local network) doesn't show up in Website settings either.
The only thing that does work is deleting ALL data from the phone by resetting it to factory defaults.
Is there an easier option, and how come this isn't done as part of clearing cache which should "clear locally cached content and databases"?

I have a Sprint HTC EVO 4G running the Fresh Gingerbread ROM. The call quality in my apartment has always been great. However, this week the call quality has been extremely choppy to the point of not being usable, no matter how I hold it. I haven't really done anything to the phone or my apartment, even though all its signal bars except one are full.
If I remember correctly I still have good call quality at work, so I don't think its solely a phone issue...
Any idea what's going on?

I have an HTC EVO, and it is my understanding that the hardware supports USB host mode. I am still working to confirm this, but even if it doesn't, I understand other devices do, and that the Android kernel supports USB2Go.
Assuming the hardware is capable, what would it take to get Android to use a USB audio interface? I am only interested in trying to get it working for class-compliant interfaces, as anything else isn't worth the effort.
I understand this is a bit of an general question. I am hoping someone has already tried this. I'm a software developer but have not dug into Android much. This would be a heavy first project for me, but any information on how/if this could even be done would be much appreciated.
**Edit:** Seems this guy got it working on a Nexus One: http://sven.killig.de/android/N1/2.2/usb_host/
**Edit #2:** So, since there seem to be drivers available... how would I load them? Is ADB the only way? Is a kernel update required, or can I simply drop the modules in place and load them? If a kernel update is required, can I replace the kernel without losing everything else?

The reason I want to do this is because some sites are able to resolve when I'm using OpenDNS or Google DNS while connected via WiFi at home, but when I'm on 3G, the same sites come up as page not found, so the easiest culprit to blame is DNS.

this is my first question on android, so I hope I will not miss anything. I bought my phone from friend probably 5 years ago, so there is no warranty. I used to login to wifi networks with no problems, but probably yesterday I clicked on "save network" (my wireless home network). For some reason, it stored my network with weird ip address(169.254.169.59), that I can not delete from phone.
My router automatically asignes 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2, ...
I tried renaming my wifi SSID and connected to it. Again, ip address in my mobile phone is 169.254.169.59. I tried connecting to two different wifi routers, my mobile still has this weird ip address.
I also tried connecting to that saved network manually with ip address I set (192.168.0.15). After connecting, my phone claims it has ip address 169.254.169.59.
How do I get rid of this saved ip address? I tried reseting my phone. I do not see any other usefull settings in my phone. I can not delete saved network (I did not see any options for deletion).
- Android version - 4.0.3
- HTC sense 3.6
- Software number = 3.28.401.1
- kernel = 3.0.16-ge733186
How do I fix this? Is it possible without factory defaults reset? My phone has never had a jail break.

I recently found that I could upgrade to the new CWM touch recovery version for my EVO 4g! However, to do this through the ROM manager app or get it directly onto the phone at all, it required a payment, although they specified it could be found (the same version) for free on their website. So naturally, I went and downloaded it as soon as I could.
But instead of a .zip file, as things that I usually flash, it is an .img file. This made sense, since I figured I wouldn't be installing a new recovery through the current recovery version, but I am unknowing as to how to install this new recovery image.
Anyone know what my next step is?

I just got a Sprint HTC Evo 4G, and discovered it is running Android v2.3.5 (Gingerbread). I manually checked for updates, which downloaded the latest security patch for 2.3.5 Gingerbread, but did not update it to a newer major OS version.
I did some searching about updating it to a newer Android version, but most of the articles I found either have dead links or require climbing up a steep learning curve to root and then flash(?) the device.
Are there any methods for easily updating to (ideally) Ice Cream Sandwich, without needing to learn the software innards of my device?

Car Mode suddenly appeared - why? And how do I get rid of it?

About 2 1/2 hrs ago, I plugged in my HTC Evo 4G to its home charger to charge up a bit before leaving the house. It's rooted running CyanogenMod-7.1.0-Supersonic (for at least a month if not more, I can't remember when my husband did this).
Within about 3 minutes, my phone had this really weird user interface I have never seen. It's Car Mode. I couldn't exit out of it, couldn't make my phone respond to me at all. I immediately pulled out the battery & rebooted, thinking maybe it was malware. It booted back into Car Mode, only this time I could click an Exit button.
Researching, I see that this is an UI for car docking. Only I have no car dock, and it was plugged into my home wall charger. I left the house for errands, and no matter what I did - on the phone on a voice call, typing email (at a doctor's office, not driving ;) ), and it kept booting me into Car Mode. On the voice call it automatically put me on speaker.
I did not ask for this program, did not download anything, did not approve anything...
I ran Lookout and no Malware or Spyware is showing. I am very confused.
Anyone have ideas on what this program is, how it all of a sudden appeared on my phone, and how to get it off? I looked up apps in Google Play and the icon in the notifications bar (when I exit Car Mode) is not something that is there. It looks like an app, but it's not in my Apps manager, either, or a running process that I can tell, yet it is showing up intermittently in my notifications, even not plugged in or moving. It's also turning on intermittently. I can't get anything done.
Thanks for any help!

I tried searching all over the web for a ruu (if I got that right?) to set the software back to factory settings, but can't find any. This is after trying to do a hard reset, which didn't help. My workarounds so far share the same fault: I can't receive calls. It can't wake if I turn it off, and it doesn't use too much power (usually) in airplanr mode.

I have a HTC EVO 4G (aka Supersonic) running Android 2.3.5 (aka Gingerbread) and last night I turned it off because it was running low on power. I connected it to the charger before going to bed and called it a night, my normal process (except for shutting it down).
This morning I turn it on and it starts up with the device screen (HTC EVOTM 4G) and then a few seconds later it shows the Sprint 4G animation, and usually after that it loads the OS and you slide down continue but now it just reboots again and again in an infinite loop. I can only stop it by pulling the battery.
Anyone experience this? Know what's causing it? Have a solution to it? I need the phone and its critical that I resolve this as soon as possible. Thanks everyone.
**Update - 12/18/13**
I went ahead and cleared the cache and the dalvik cache and still couldn't get it to boot into the OS, it would load the slide screen and then freeze up for a second and go back into the loop. From then on, it wouldn't even get to that screen, just would reboot after the startup animation.
I was not even running a custom ROM, just the stock ROM rooted but went ahead and flashed a stock ROM back on it and got it up and running but still bugs me that I had to lose all my customization and start over without knowing what the heck went wrong.
Anyone have any ideas?
