I recently bought a Nexus 4 and I would like to transfer my photos of my previous device to it. My previous Android phone used the standard USB mass storage which gave 0 problems to copy back and forth stuff, but the Nexus 4, like many other modern Android phones I suppose, uses MTP instead, which has the interesting feature of refusing to copy the original dates/timestamps of the files, using instead the date at which the files are being copied.
This is obviously a huge bummer when it comes to photos; not only because one cannot check the original date at which the picture was taken while browsing on the phone, but also because they end up completely unsorted.
Is there a way to transfer photos to a Jelly Bean Android phone that doesn't support USB mass storage preserving the original timestamps?
Things I've tried so far:
- Transferring via USB MTP
- ADB push (both full folders and individual files)
- Transferring via SSH (using SSHDroid + WinSCP)
- Uploading and downloading from Dropbox
- Transferring a ZIP file via MTP and uncompressing the file on the phone
- Transferring from the other phone via Bluetooth
None of them preserved the timestamp, and this is driving me insane.
(Also, I am not rooted yet, but if the only viable way requires root I would welcome that answer as well.)

I am now trying to get my old phone to life.
This is Nexus 4 with Android 5.1.1. I have successfully restored it to the factory, now I am trying to configure it with my Google account. Unfortunately, each time I enter a password, it redirects me to the "Add phone number?" screen and I get stuck there - links "more info", "skip", and "I'm in" simply do not work. The only thing I can do is cancel the whole operation.
I also gave a try with another Google account - it also got stuck on the screen asking "Who will be using this device?".
Is there any way to configure the account?

No cellular network after OTA to lollipop (Nexus 4)

I have a Nexus 4 with Kitkat, working fine with t-mobile (USA). Yesterday, I did an OTA to Lollipop (LRX21T; baseband M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.01701.04). But after that the cellular network only briefly works.
First problem, I encountered was the lack of data connection, but after I changed the APN setting, it worked...but only briefly. Every time I reboot the phone, it can make phone calls, and access the data network for a few minutes (or sometimes I have no access to begin with). But then the network indicator becomes either an 'empty triangle' or a 'full triangle with an exclamation point'. Then, I can't make phone calls or use the data afterwards.
Very strangely, I just found out that if I connect to wifi, I can make phone calls suddenly. If I turn off wifi, I can't make phone calls any more. What is going on?
Does anybody have the same problem? Does anybody a known workaround?
My current APN setting is:
T-Mobile GPRS
APN: fast.t-mobile.come
Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: not set
Password: not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms
MMS proxy: not set
MMS port: not set
MMC: 310
MNC: 260
Authentication type: not set
APN type: default,supl,mms,dun
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: unspecified
MVNO type: none
MVNO value: not set
Further testing using
*#*#4636#*#*
* GSM service: in service
* GPRS service: disconnected
* Network type: UMTS
* Call redirect: false
* Call status: idle
* radio resets: 0
* data attempts : 0
* data successes: 0
* cellinfolistrate 2147483647
* IMS registration required is 'off'
* SMS over IMS is 'off'
* SMSC: _______ [update][refresh]
* Toggle DNS check: 0.0.0.0 not allowed
**EDIT**: During the moments when the network works, **GPRS service** is 'connected'.
**EDIT2**: If I force using 2G, it works fine. Just with unbearably slow speed.

On my Nexus 4 (Android 5.0), applications in the background keep content for an hour or more. It is quite strange, as they have the same amount of memory, 2GB.
Is there a setting for this? How can I avoid unnecessary reloads?

I'm running Android 4.2.1 stock.
Have looked at a Nexus 7 running 4.1.1 and it has separate volume streams so this looks like a phone specific bug/feature.
**Update**
Tried various apps but couldn't fine one which separated the Ring and notification audio streams.
In the end I downloaded the Cyanogenmod notification sounds , selected the ones I liked and processed them to -10db and -15db versions. Then copied them to the 'Notifications' folder on the phone. (The phone looks at the title tag in the mp3 file rather than the file name so needed to change that as well.)
I now have the ringtone as normal but a quieter version of the notification sound that doesn't wake me at night or sound ridiculously loud in meetings.

I'm new to android development so apologies if this is a stupid question.
I'm having trouble seeing my android devices in Eclipse. I've switched on USB debugging, configured them to connect as a camera not mass storage, but when I run ./adb devices, there's no device showing, even though I have a Samsung Galaxy and a LG Nexus connected via USB. On both phones I get a notification saying "USB debugging connected" and "connected as a camera" so the phone obviously thinks it's connected.
The problem appears to be intermittent. Sometimes the Galaxy shows up:
Macbook:~/workspace/android-sdks/platform-tools ./adb devices
List of devices attached
3334AB246B5300EC device
Then I unplug and reconnect it, and it disappears.
I've tried 3 cables and 2 devices now. Should I just give up and use an emulator instead?

My Nexus 4 device stopped connecting to the Cisco router at work for some reason. I thought it was because the upgrade to lollipop 5.0 (had Kit-Kat before) but I'm not so sure anymore.
**I tried:**
- Restart the device
- Restart the device with safe mode
- Restart the router
- Change the device WiFi frequency settings
- Use static IP at the advance WiFi connection configuration
- Forget the router AP and reconnect
- Factory reset trough the device settings, recovery mode and complete flashing the Android Lollipop 5.1 factory image.
After factory reset I had the connection possible until restarting the device.
I checked with/without signing in, nothing new installed, didn't visit the store, just super clean phone - I could connect the network. after restarting the phone I can no longer connect which means it's not an application issue.
**Some facts:**
- I can connect other Cisco routers at work
- Another Nexus 4 after factory reset connects with no trouble
**About the device:**
- Nexus 4
- Lollipop 5.1
- build number LMY470
- kernel version 3.4.0-perf-gf75bb4f
Any suggestion will be welcome, please let me know if I can provide more details.

I have my school's e-mail account being checked via IMAP SSL/TLS on port 993. It is an Exchange mailbox but I did not want to to use MAPI and have my device "managed" by the school.
Anyhow, this worked fine prior to 4.2.2 update. Ever since then, e-mail is not being synchronized automatically and requires me to manually press the synchronize button.
My testing:
1. Send test e-mail to self from another account
2. Set checking frequency to 5 minutes
3. Wait 10 minutes (just to pad a bit)
Still nothing. If I go to the client and manually hit refresh though, I do get the message pulled. Also, if I restart the phone, all the new messages get pulled as well.
Things I've checked:
- **Factory reset**: Reluctantly did one yesterday but, unfortunately, did not fix the issue.
- **System Settings -> Accounts -> Email**: The synchronize button icon is green, when I click on the account, "Email" setting is checked. Says "Last synced" with a time that's over 5 minutes ago.
- **System Settings -> Data Usage -> Menu -> Auto-Sync Data**: Saw that this was the issue with many people. That, however, is checked for me.
- **Wifi vs. Mobile Data**: I've tested on both and no difference in results.
Does anyone have any suggestions on things I should check or test to figure this out.

Some other advises: one , two , three . I don't know which I should follow, it required a lot of time to try them all.
And I want to avoid rooting.

What happens is that random apps will begin crashing, usually Google apps like Gmail, Settings, etc. If I try to report the crash, the crash reporter also crashes. I plugged the phone in to check the logcat and all of the error messages are the same:

I go to settings -> about phone -> system update but it just shows that "system is up to date" even when I click check for update. I'm running 4.4.4.
I know that I could go and manually do the update but it seems ridiculous that there is no way to get the OTA update back? I don't want to have to do a bunch of manual work.
Is there no way to do this?

I'm looking to add a Russian Phonetic keyboard layout to the default list of input layouts in Jellybean 4.2.2.
Going into Settings->Language & Input->Keyboard & Input Methods/Android Keyboard->Input Languages
On that menu I see Russian, but it is the standard Russian keyboard which doesn't have Russian letters mapped to the English QWERTY layout. There apps that do this but I lose the gesture typing capabilities for example.
I was hoping there was a way of adding a Russian (Phonetic) layout to the list by somehow modifying the standard Russian layout and readding it as a phonetic variation.

Strange behavior on Nexus 4, Android 5.0.1 (issue with Google Play Services?) Apps don't autostart, Google apps don't work, phone freezes

**Update:** Resetting only the Google Play Services app as has been suggested didn't work for me unfortunately, because (in addition to what I've written below) the "force stop" and "uninstall updates" buttons are greyed out.
I decided to do a factory reset, and so far I haven't had any more issues with Google Play Services, but I still don't know what exactly caused these problems (probably an update).
---------- I have a Nexus 4 with Android 5.0.1 (no custom rom), and there have been several issues for a few hours now. It probably started yesterday when a message popped up 2-3 times (over the course of a few hours) saying that "**Google Play services has stopped working**". Now, after booting the phone and getting to the lockscreen, the **apps which would usually autostart don't seem to start** (messaging apps, gmail, battery widget app etc.) and it doesn't even connect to a cellular network. WLAN works straight away. Sometimes these apps will start (and it connects to the cellular network) more than half an hour after booting the phone. I've also noticed that for several minutes after booting, the **list of running apps** contains only Settings, Media, Google Services (not Play services!) and Google Keyboard, and after some time, if Google Play services does show up, it is constantly shown as "restarting". After using the phone for anything between a few minutes and maybe an hour, it will **freeze and not respond to any touchscreen input**, sometimes saying that the launcher is not responding. Prior to freezing, it will usually start lagging heavily. It will still respond to the power button though. (turn screen on/off, show "power off" dialog) Additionally, **Google's own apps won't work** even when I try to start them manually (I have tried Play Store, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, News & Weather). They either go to a blank screen or don't open at all. The system seems more likely to freeze after trying to open these apps. I can open the **settings menu**, but some of the options don't work:
- About Phone > System updates: It goes to a blank screen for about a second, and then back to the "About phone" menu.
- About phone > Status: works only when connected to a cellular network, otherwise I get a dialog saying that the process com.android.phone has stopped.
(these are the ones I found not to work) ## What I've tried: ## - **Disabling the Google Play services app and replacing it with the factory version.**
Doesn't work because in order to do this, I would have to disable "Android Device manager" from being a device administrator, but its checkbox stays checked even after trying to disable it.
(Is it normal that "force stop" and "uninstall updates" are greyed out for Google Play services?) - **Booting in safe mode.**
Works, but I get the same problems in safe mode. - **Wiping the cache partition.**
Works, but doesn't fix any of the issues. What could have caused these issues? I haven't installed any new apps recently. Is there anything else I could try? If not, I guess I'll have to do a factory reset.

If I browse the phone using ES File Explorer I can see the folder/files, but when connected to a Windows 7 (64bit) PC I cannot see the newly created folder. The missing folder is called "Cruise Speed".

I've downgraded from Cyanogenmod 13 (Android 6.0.1) to Android stock 5.1.1, and kept my previous mmssms.db file, but it is incompatible with older Android versions. I would like to import this database in an Android Virtual Device running Android 6.0, back it up using SMS Save & Restore, then restore the .xml file produced by that app on my device.
However, when I copy my old **com.android.providers.telephony** directory in the **/data/data/** directory of the AVD, neither the Messenger app, nor SMS Backup & Restore see any message. The directory and its contents are owned by the **radio** user, belong to the radio group, and have **chmod** set to 771.
How can I check what is preventing the system from accessing my database?
Or how else can I retrieve my sms ?
