Another Without-Unlock Backup Question: (Temporarily) Booting a Recovery?

There was a nice thorough discussion of backups for non-rooted (and maybe also locked) devices [here](https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/28296/how-to-fully-backup-non-rooted-devices) . Most of that covered Android 4.x+ because of the use of
adb backup
, which apparently doesn't exist in prior versions. A [second question](https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/33479/full-backup-of-non-rooted-devices-android-version-2-3-x-and-below) on backing up 2.3.x under the same conditions, found no answers.
I'm am dealing with Honeycomb 3.2.6, which I have not yet unlocked, and I am considering [the last answer](https://android.stackexchange.com/a/159860/335152) at the first link. I am considering if there is a way to, possibly temporarily, boot a recovery to do the backup. I can see three possibilities:
(1) That answer suggests connecting via USB with Debugging enabled and then:
abd reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp.img
fastboot reboot
As opposed to fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
, that [should temporarily boot the twrp.img](https://android.stackexchange.com/a/181127/335152) without changing/wiping /data. From there it should be possible to do a nandroid backup to an SDCard. The author of that idea didn't seem to have tried it themselves. I wonder if anyone has, and if it's likely to work as described.
(2) According to the [TWRP website for this device](https://twrp.me/motorola/motorolaxoom.html) , if I fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
and then on reboot press the proper key combination to enter the recovery (in this case power+volume-down), then
> Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically
> during first boot. To prevent this, ... find the proper key combo to
> enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and
> boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to
> prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this
> step, you will have to repeat the install.
Is this true for TWRP on all/most/many devices?
(3) Another approach to temporarily booting a recovery, mentioned in one of the comments at that first link, is to boot one off of an SDCard. I found one example in [another device I have](https://twrp.me/bn/barnesnoblenooktablet.html) . I'm wondering under what conditions that might work and how to arrange it? If anyone has any insight, I would also appreciate them.

I have a bunch of photos on my Samsung Galaxy Tab running 3.2 which I'd like to copy over USB to my main machine running Linux so I can work on them with GIMP and other power tools. Despite this seeming like a simple and common thing to do, I haven't found any way to do this after hours of googling and experimenting.
Some answers and articles already out there assume the existence of sdcard, which I don't have (AFIK), mention directories named /dcim or /emmc (sp?), involve Windows-only software such as Kies, or are about some specialized problem not relevent here.
I figured I could poke around the Galaxy Tab's file system with adb, but found no place holding .jpg or other image files, which I should have at least 30 or so of. If I knew the path, I could just do an adb pull to get my photos.
If it's possible, I prefer to use adb pull, since it can be automated, but I also wonder how regular folk, the nontechies, get their photos off their tablets. I have read about MTP and that the USB mass storage device way of doing things doesn't work with the Galaxy Tab (or anything Samsung?)
Just to be clear, my photos do exist on the tablet. I can see them all in the Gallery, as a regular end user. I do have the proper USB cable, and adb runs fine.

How can I watch movies on my tablet (Asus Transformer tablet with Android 3.2) offline?
I recognize that this is a very basic question, however, I can not find any step-by-step instructions on this site or online. It is also not clear if any popular sites such as Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu support offline viewing. I think that it would be useful to have step-by-step instructions.
If I had the tablet in my hands, I would probably be able to figure something out - even though it is a new device and my first experience with Android. However, my wife has taken it and the children on a trip, and would like to use it for entertainment on the flight home.

Does Android 3.2.1 support auto-complete feature?
When I type with a keyboard in any app on my older Acer Android Tablet, I don't get any words automatically suggested (above the keyboard), although auto-correct does work. I can't find a setting for this feature either. Is this feature not supported in Android 3.2.1?

Mapping Xbox 360 (wired) controller buttons on SuperGNES
I'm trying to map A & B buttons in the SuperGNES emulator (on ACER A500 running Android 3.2) but it seems that A & B buttons are mapped as "back" action by default on Android. Is there any way to bypass or change this configuration so I can use those buttons?

Simple straight question: I own an Acer Iconia Tab A500 w/3.2 OS and a Windows 7 PC with lots of movies, including H.264 HD in Matroska format.
How can I stream that content, supposed that I installed K-Lite Codec Pack, on Android by installing the least possible amount of software? The tablet is already shipped with Acer ClearFi which is a DLNA implementation and looks compatible with Windows Media Center, however when I tried to play a non-HD movie in MPEG-4 format the default player reported that the fortmat is unsupported.
I'm new and a bit confused to Android video and home streaming. I don't know how codecs work in the Linux-like world.
[EDIT] About codecs (if these matter): on Windows, I can watch the videos with Windows Media Player too, not only VLC/MPC
I remember that once I was able to stream to my Xbox 360 with Vuze's embedded media server with live transcoding. Do I need something like that for streaming to Android too?
Thank you.

I just bought a brand new Iconia Tab A500. I just unboxed it and it shall be charging for the next 14 hours :)
While I wait for first booting it, I have a question on rooting with 3.2. The tablet comes with Honey 3.0, but I read that the 3.2 update is ready to be delivered OTA. But I absolutely want to root it!
1. Can I root the device after the OS upgrade?
2. Or should I root it first?
3. Or, does upgrade remove rooting and currently there's no [yet] rooting for HC3.2?
Thank you

Archive SMS messages, without extra permissions

Answers to the following question list a number of Android apps that can be used to backup SMS messages:
- [How do I backup and restore SMS Messages?](https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/2466/how-do-i-backup-and-restore-sms-messages)
However, all of the applications mentioned in the answers seem to require lots of permissions that are not strictly necessary; examples include "receive SMS", "edit SMS or MMS", "full Internet access", "read contact data", "write contact data", "write contact data", "read phone state and identity", etc.
Is there any tool that
1. simply copies all SMS messages to a local file on the SD card,
2. does not require any irrelevant permissions – as far as I can see, permissions "read SMS or MMS" and "modify/delete SD card contents" should be enough.
---
**Edit:** Based on the answers, I had a closer look at *[SMS Backup & Restore Pro](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestorePro)* . It is better than nothing – at least it does not require any kind of Internet access. However:
- It cannot copy messages stored on the SIM card, only messages stored in the inbox.
- It does not work on **Android 3.2 tablets**.
- It still requires far too many permissions for my needs.
TxtArchive does not seem to work on Android 3.2, either.

Obviously the file is there since I can open it with Browser. This was not a problem on Android 2.2.1.
Why can't HTMLViewer open an HTML file?
