For one PDF file, command-F opens an unusual "Find" window

I downloaded [this paywalled article](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0079642520300013) from a university library WiFi (that I don't often use). Later, opened the article in Preview, and when I tried to search for a word by typing command-F a new window opened up for finding text. I have never seen this happen before! [![screenshot of unusual (to me at least) find window](https://i.sstatic.net/bZHs2BEU.png)](https://i.sstatic.net/bZHs2BEU.png) Until today, this is what always happened; the usual magnifying glass box expands and the cursor moves to there ready for me to type the search term. It is still available if I click there manually, it's just that command-F has unexpected behavior (for me) for this document. [![enter image description here](https://i.sstatic.net/f5I5kom6.png)](https://i.sstatic.net/f5I5kom6.png) I'm concerned - has something in the PDF "hijacked" Preview? Might it be trying to sending my search terms back to the publisher for statistical analysis? MacBook Air 2020 Core i5 macOS: Sonoma 14.7.2 Preview: Version 11.0 (1056.5.1)

But this crappy problem is not letting me install it. As you see in the title, it's stuck on the Apple logo. I've tried changing the date (as I read it would install because of certificate stuff) I'm a newbie at this type of stuff and I just want to install it for nostalgia purposes. (Also I'm using a Macbook Pro Mid-2010 15-inch.)

I take videos with my iPhone and I would like them to be automatically transferred to my MacBook without using iCloud. The use case is that I take large videos, filming for 15 min to hours and I want the files to get to my computer as soon as the camera is stopped. Because those files are larges they fill the phone fast and it’s annoying to always have to stop, plug the phone, select the files, delete the files, etc. I would like to set it up once and have the file transferred via WiFi and deleted on the iPhone as soon as the video is taken and the WiFi is on. With all the people vlogging, there should be a better way. I tried Airdrop and I had a look at software to sync (like Syncthing) but it seems that iOS forbids automatic actions on files so it’s not possible for a third-party application. Any ideas?

I know a lot of people have problems with the MacBook Pro's CPU fan running super loud and IMO the Activity Monitor is less than unreliable in telling what's really causing it… but let's check what happens when no applications are running. What I find absolutely unbelievable that my Mac's CPU fans were running at maximum speed after just booting up, from a switched off state, with the charger cable disconnected. I can't see any reason for that, no applications should be running at this stage. Is it possible to debug this somehow or is this simply an indication of a possible rootkit and a complete reinstall of my Mac? enter image description here

He is high fall risk and leaves the house only for medical reasons. Assume he cannot set it up as described above. I live 6+ hours away and unable to do the drive. Is there a way to remotely configure the Apple Watch? The alternative is to ship his phone to me and I configure it at my home. Any lessons learned to advance the mission is appreciated.

I only copied files from my old drive, about 300GB to new drive. New drive is showing over 600GB used, 300GB free. When actually looking at the file content of the new drive by getting the storage used for each of the folders, there's only 300GB of files in those folders. Any idea why this would be? New drive was freshly reformatted before I copied the files.

Here is what I get from diskutil list screenshot of GUID partition scheme I've read a few other forums and I think I generally understand the process but I want to double check I'm taking the right steps I got my Mac secondhand and noticed I’m “missing” around 90GB, while diskutil shows (free space) of 91.4GB which adds up. The free space does not show up in the Disk Utility application, neither in Recovery mode nor from a normal boot. From my understanding, I need to: 1. Format the free space as an APFS partition. 2. Use the Disk Utility application to adjust the size of the partitions. Is this correct? Is it better to delete the newly created partition for (free space) afterwards? Since (free space) comes after disk0s3, is this the right command to use?
diskutil addpartition disk0s3 apfs NewAPFS 0
Just want to double check since I tried to do something similar a few years ago and bricked my system which involved a lot of work to get fixed. This is my daily computer so I want to make sure I do it right the first time.

I'm trying to build a Shortcut for switching to Do Not Disturb for a given number of minutes. Afterwards, the previous Focus mode should be restored. For example, I have a mode called "Work". When starting the Shortcut and providing 1 minute as input, I want it to switch to Do Not Disturb for 1 minute, and switch back to Work afterwards. My problem is that restoring the previous Focus mode does not work. Instead, DND turns off as expected, but then it turns on DND again, and not the previous Focus mode. Here's how my Shortcut currently looks: enter image description here I added Speak as debug output, and it correctly outputs "Work" for the example described above, both before prompting for input, as well as after waiting till DND is over. I also added additional 10 seconds of waiting, to make sure I'm not running into race conditions, but that doesn't change anything. Does anyone know how to restore the previous Focus mode correctly?

In my iCloud storage it says that just over 100kb are being used by Pages. I used to use Pages a while back but never saved anything to iCloud drive. On checking iCloud drive there were no documents in there. I'm confused about what data Pages is saving to my iCloud - I know it is a very small amount of memory taken up but just wanted to know if anyone knows what might be saved in there and if it safe to delete it. There is also around 20kb taken up by iCloud drive - other documents, no idea what this is either. As seen in the screenshots below there are no documents in either section - just 'data' - whatever that is.enter image description here enter image description here enter image description here

EDIT: Do not do this. This created a startup error that has now forced me to reinstall my OS from Internet Recovery. I'm one of a number of MacBook Pro users unfortunately plagued by a longstanding issue apparently related to faulty power chips on the motherboard of my 2015 Retina MacBook Pro (most notably documented [here](https://outluch.wixsite.com/rmbp-crash) as well as on a number of Macrumors threads and AD questions). It's my understanding that this issue affects the the 820-3662 and 820-3787 logic boards. For clarity's sake, I have methodically assessed and eliminated most other potential causes for the crashes, and when I initially diagnosed the problem, I went through all the typical steps including several fresh installs, EtreCheck, and an Apple hardware and software diagnostic (all unremarkable). This problem has been reliably solved in the past by disabling several Thunderbolt-related kernel extensions on the SSV (and reportedly as well by [this app](https://realmacmods.com/product/macbook-pro-nocrash-utility/) , though I haven't tried it myself), which I've been doing every time I update the OS. Probably against my better judgment, I updated to Big Sur, and after a bit of forum trawling (I am not a developer and much of this is over my head), my understanding is that Big Sur has, in the process of becoming more secure, made it much more difficult to write the SSV. On advice from several threads and blog posts, including the following: - https://eclecticlight.co/2020/06/25/big-surs-signed-system-volume-added-security-protection/ - http://disq.us/p/2ak4vda - https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/395508/mount-root-as-writable-in-big-sur I've done the following: 1. Boot into the Terminal in Recovery Mode (reboot holding Command-R and open Terminal under Utilities in the menu bar). 2. mount -uw /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD (on my Mac, I understand nomenclature can vary). 3. Navigate to the relevant folder with cd /Systems/Library/Extensions/ 4. Rename the relevant kernel extensions from the suffix .kext to .kext.BAK (disabling them) with mv AppleThunderboltNHI.kext AppleThunderboltNHI.kext.BAK, for example 5. Repeating the above with each of the relevant kernel extensions - many users have been able to get by with just disabling the above, others have had to disable nearly all thunderbolt-related kernel extensions. Fortunately I don't actually use these functions on my MacBook. The list that I used this time comes from [here](https://dean.codes/macbook-pro-retina-15-inch-mid-2014-thunderbolt-issue/) and includes: - AppleThunderboltDPAdapters.kext - AppleThunderboltIP.kext - AppleThunderboltPCIAdapters.kext - AppleThunderboltEDMService.kext - AppleThunderboltUTDM.kext - and finally, the above-mentioned AppleThunderboltNHI.kext 4. Disabled protections with csrutil authenticated-root disable 5. "Blessed" the changes I've made in the snapshot I've been working with with sudo bless --folder /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/CoreServices --bootefi --create-snapshot 6. Rebooted into normal mode. Thus far, seems like it's working (I've had no crashes) but I'll need to use the laptop for a week or so to tell - the crashes are fairly unpredictable. I've posted this for two purposes: 1. I hope that if this works, it's a useful resource for others that are less savvy, like myself. 2. As mentioned, this is well above my head and I'm hoping someone can check my work and make sure I haven't done anything completely egregious. For example, do I need to re-enable the systems protections that I've disabled, or does that happen automatically when I reboot into normal mode? Thank you so much for your time, I really appreciate this community.

My sister is traveling abroad for a few months, and I'd love to track her for safety reasons (with her permission of course), knowing at least once per day where she is, with also the possibility to check when needed where she is exactly (GPS), ring the phone if needed etc (she has an iphone). I've seen the existence of "Find My", that seems to be an official Apple app to recover lost devices, and it mentions that you can follow family members etc. So I tried to create an apple account and install it in icloud.com, but I get an error saying that I need to have an apple device to use Find My in icloud.com. Is it possible to use Find My for this purpose without having myself an apple device? Or should I ask the password of my sister? If I want regular reports (once per day, needed if for instance the phone runs out of battery at some point, I may be happy to have the history), can I use some API to automatically query the position once per day?
